Steve Callahan Leads All Laps on Way to Win in Terry Gibson Fast 50
January 14, 2020 – Sandusky, OH…Work has kept him from racing as much as he’d like, but Steve Callahan of Cuyahoga Falls, OH served notice that he’s as fast as ever, flying away from the Supermodified Ultimate Pavement Racing Series, (SUPRS), pack and into victory lane Tuesday night for the Terry Gibson Fast 50 at Sandusky Speedway. For the second straight year, Rob Warren and Bob Gangwer finished second and third, albeit, a great distance behind the dominant winner.
Sandusky Special to Callahan
“Sandusky is the first track I ever saw a race at,” Callahan said. “I haven’t been able to run a lot because of work, but every year, I look forward to this week with the Terry Gibson Memorial.” It is the second time Callahan has won the Terry Gibson Fast 50.
Callahan was able to stretch his lead as positions two through five raced each other hard and ended up winning the race by almost a half a track and over eight seconds ahead of second place finisher Rob Warren.
“I’m just real happy I could be here tonight, and win this one. It’s not as easy as it seems, these guys are all just so fast and consistent. I had some luck starting up front and running in clean air,” Callahan commented after his second win of the SUPRS current season.
Race Notes
Earlier in the evening Nelson Rodrigues picked up his first NASCAR Heat supermodified checkered flag when he won the first 10 lap heat. Rodrigues has struggled with the NASCAR Heat platform, but did well throughout the night until a crash in the feature. The ageless Carl Becker also had a good night, fighting off Rob Warren for the second heat race win and doing well in the feature where he ran the second fastest lap of the night with a 14.454.
Not surprisingly, Callahan, in clean air and with a huge lead, had the fastest lap of the race at 14.416 seconds. Rob Warren advanced the most places from his starting place by passing three drivers.
100 Lapper on Wednesday
Tomorrow, January 15, 2020, the SUPRS competitors are back at Sandusky for to try to become the 2020 Terry Gibson Memorial 100 Champion. Last year, Dave Ohh became a first time winner, and won his first SUPRS feature event.
A brief practice session begins at 8:00 pm, time trials, heats, and a b-main will follow. The green flag is set to drop on the big race around 9:15 pm after opening ceremonies and driver introductions.
