January 12, 2021 – Sandusky, OH..Dave Ohh took off from the pole position at the drop of the green flag and never slowed down, leading all the laps of the Supermodified Ultimate Pavement Racing Series, (SUPRS), Gibson Fast 50 Tuesday night at Sandusky Speedway. Keith Powell, try as he might, and even having the fastest lap of the feature, just couldn’t close the one second gap that Ohh held, and came home second for yet another year. Rob Warren rounded out the top three.
It is the second time Ohh, of Union, CT, has won the 50 lap tune up to the Terry Gibson Memorial 100. He led all 50 laps, set the fastest lap of the race and lapped all the cars up to Carl Becker who finished in fourth. Ohh now has 10 race wins on the season and has now strung together three feature victories in a row.
“It’s good, I’m looking forward to tomorrow,” said Ohh who drives the TMS Wolfpack #11 roadster. “It’s always tough coming up on lapped traffic, and they are racing for position. I had a couple close calls, the car was good until about lap 38 then I lost about half the front nose wing, but we’ll be OK, (for tomorrow).”
Good Battles Further Back
Twelve drivers took the green flag for the Gibson Fast 50 with 11 finishing. As is usually the case at Sandusky, lapped traffic proved difficult for several drivers to navigate, leading to some close quarters racing from third on back. The most intense battle came from a pack of cars battling for the podium position early in the race as Ohh stretched his lead over second place running Keith Powell. Eventually that battle broke into a two way tug of war for third between Carl Becker and Rob Warren, then a little further back, an intense four car battle between Gary Waldron, Brad Keysor, Ryan Cloonan, and Bob Gangwer.
Warren was able to finally get the best of Becker in lapped traffic, the cagey veteran rarely giving Warren time to breath as he fought hard to hang onto the podium. When the quartet of followers encounted some of the same heavy lapped traffic, things went sour for Gary Waldron who clipped the inside hub rail and slowed allowing Keysor, Cloonan, and Gangwer to sail by. Cloonan was then the next to succumb to lapped traffic and dropped back as well, leaving Keysor and Gangwer to duke it out for fourth. Gangwer eventually got by Keysor when the Liverpool, NY racer slid a little high in the corner.
Other Race Notes
Earlier in the evening the ageless Carl “Bonzai” Becker, and former SUPRS champion, Keith Powell, won their heat races. During the feature, Ohh had the fastest lap of the race at 14.397 seconds and Rob Warren advanced the most places from his starting spot at four.
Big Show on Wednesday
Tomorrow, January 13, 2021, the SUPRS competitors are back at Sandusky for to try to become the 2021 Terry Gibson Memorial 100 Champion. Seven drivers have won this race with, with Rob Warren having the most of active drivers, with two back to back wins in 2017-2018. Ray Sand, Jr. has the most Terry Gibson Memorial Wins with an incredible four in a row from 2012-2015. Myles Maxon is the only other driver to have multiple wins in this race having been victorious at the first running of the 100 in 2009 then again in 2011.
A brief practice session begins at 8:00 pm, time trials, heats, and a b-main will follow. The green flag is set to drop on the big race around 9:15 pm after opening ceremonies and driver introductions.
