Quick Results: Ohh Wins Fourth Gibson Fast 50

January 10, 2023 – Sandusky, OH..Dave Ohh, of Union, CT, won his fourth Supermodified Ultimate Pavement Racing Series, (SUPRS), Gibson Fast 50 Tuesday night at Sandusky Speedway. It was the third time in a row that checkered flag had flown over the #11 TMS Wolfpack machine in the prelim to the Terry Gibson Memorial.

Ohh passed early leader, Bob Gangwer on lap 23 and went on to win by over two seconds. Gangwer held onto a second finishing a comfortable seven seconds in front of Brad Keysor.

Earlier in the night Ohh and Gangwer won their respective 10 lap qualifying heat races where the top three got their handicaps back for the feature inversion.

Hectic Start Not Like Other Races

After making his previous wins in the Gibson 50 seem like cake, this race wasn’t the most comfortable way to win for Ohh. He had to work hard to come from half-way back in the grid and keep the nose clean on his HeatFinder.net sponsored machine. “This race started out a lot more hectic than the ones before,” he said. We all had a battle going from second to seventh and Bob was able to get a good lead early. I was jockeying around trying to get through all of that with a clean car, and luckily I did.”

Once Ohh cleared the snarling pack of SUPRS racers, he set his sights on Gangwer. Gangwer took the lead when the green flag dropped after pole-sitter, Bobby Hayduk had a horrendous start. Gangwer built up a comfortable cushion of over a second, but then Ohh got into a good rhythm and showed why he has more NASCAR Heat championships than just about every other sim racer that has existed since the game came out in 2000.

“I closed up on Bob some, then I lost it,” Ohh explained. He was running some decent laps and I was running some really good laps and I got a good run under him.”

Lapped Cars Tricky

Ohh then only had to worry about a couple of lapped cars, but those threw a monkey wrench or two into the mix as well. “I think we both, (he and Gangwer), got some damage going around some lapped cars,” said Ohh. Towards the very end of the race, Ohh approached a pack of several drivers having a rough tousle for position of their own and backed off some. “I could see that pack at the end,” he said. “I think I got to the nerf bar of the first car, but they didn’t hurt me. Tonight was 50 laps and it was tough, tomorrow is 100 so it will be interesting.”

From One Champion to Another

Reigning SUPRS champ Dave Ohh closed the night with a thought that was on everyone’s mind for another SUPRS champion. “I just want to pass my condolences along to Rob Warren and his family on the loss of Rob’s dad,” said Ohh.

Big Show on Wednesday

Tomorrow, January 11, 2023, the SUPRS competitors are back at Sandusky to try to become the 2023 Terry Gibson Memorial 100 Champion. Seven drivers have won this race, with Dave Ohh having the most of active drivers, with two back to back wins in 2021-22 and a third in 2019. He will try to tie Ray Sand, Jr., who has the most Terry Gibson Memorial wins with an incredible four in a row from 2012-2015. Rob Warren and Myles Maxon are the only other drivers to have multiple wins.

A brief practice session begins at 8:00 pm, time trials, heats, and a b-main will follow. The green flag is set to drop on the big race around 9:00 pm after opening ceremonies and driver introductions.

This race is part of the SUPRS/HeatFinder.net NASCAR Heat Supermodified Challenge Series and are open to all drivers that have registered at SUPRS.net and downloaded the proper car and track files within 24 hours of race time.

In addition to this being an open show for the public, it’s also part of SUPRS season long “Ohio State 500 Series” consisting of five 100 lap races across the Buckeye state. Dave Ohh is the current point leader in that series after winning the first race at Toledo Speedway back in October.

The winner of the 100 lap feature becomes a guaranteed starter for the season ending 19th Annual Summit Classic 125 at Madera Speedway in April.
