Ray Sand, Jr. Brings Home First Win of Season and Third Terry Gibson Fast 50
From the drop of the green flag, the night was all Ray Sand, Jr.’s as he powered to his third SUPRS Terry Gibson Fast 50 at Sandusky Speedway.
“I’ll tell you what, you can’t really complain the way that went tonight, first win of the year, ya, it feels good,” began the reigning series champion. “I started on the pole and just checked out but I knew Myles (Maxon) was gonna be there later on so i just concentrated on hitting my marks.”
At this point of the season last year Sand, Jr. had six feature wins and was on the way to his third straight SUPRS Gold Crest Wing Championship. This year though, things have been a bit different as he’s run a part-time schedule. When asked about how tough it’s been trying to make the shows and be competitive he said, “Sketchy is the least you can say about this year. I mean with these race cars and my kids, I just got a lot going on and wish I could be here every week, but it’s been tough. It looks like Myles is on the way to a championship but you never know in this league it’s so close. So I’m going to race hard and go for it tomorrow night.”
Myles Maxon came home in second place and Chris Meyers had a competitive race to third place.
“First off congrats to Ray on the win. I don’t think i could have caught the 18 tonight, Ray was pretty stout here so we’ll use this as a tune up for the big one tomorrow,” said Maxon.
Chris Meyer’s was happy to be on the podium at his home track and said, “Feels good to be on the podium after a great run with Rob Warren here tonight. I’ll take a third here tonight and get ready for tomorrow night.”
The field was incredibly close in lap times for the feature but strung out in the 50 lapper with three distinct pack battles going on for the duration of the race.
Earlier in the evening Sand, Jr. and Rob Warren won heats.
Tomorrow the SUPRS competitors will be racing to have their name listed as Terry Gibson Memorial 100 Champion. It won’t be easy though as this race has only produced three different winners in the previous six running’s and Ray Sand, Jr. stands atop the heap with three wins in a row.
