Fourth Terry Gibson Memorial 100 Win for Ray Sand, Jr.

As he did the night before, Ray Sand, Jr. of Rochester, NY took off at the drop of the green flag Wednesday and was never challenged, leading the entire 100 lap distance on his way to winning the Supermodified Ultimate Pavement Racing Series 7th Annual Terry Gibson Memorial at Sandusky Speedway.

Ray Sand Jr wins fourth Terry Gibson Memorial in a row“This is an honor, a real honor and it’s really special,” said the smiling winner. “Like last night, I started on the pole and just checked out, but this isn’t about me, this one’s for Terry,” he said in reference to the late Terry Gibson.

The win as an unprecedented fourth Terry Gibson Memorial 100 victory in a row for Sand, Jr. and gives him a  guaranteed starting spot for the 11th Annual Summit Classic 125 later this year at Madera Speedway.

All Steve Callahan could do was watch his chances of winning this prestigious race vaporize before his eyes once again, and although the race was never his to lead unlike the previous two, he still came home the bridesmaid. Callahan finished some four seconds behind Sand, Jr. and said, “I knew from about lap 40 on there was no way I was going to catch Ray unless he screwed up. Congratulations to him though, he deserves this and what really matters is we remember Terry and the Gibson family and all they have lost and all they have done for supermodifieds.”

After what amounted to 100 laps of being in a battle somewhere on the track, a relieved but tired Rob Warren brought his trusty roadster home for a well-deserved third place finish. “Let me tell you, that had to be one of the most exciting 100 lap races I’ve ever run,” he said. “There were some great battles all around from the green flag and I never got a chance to breathe out there, my hat’s of to Ray for the win.” For his efforts of moving up four positions from his starting spot, Warren received 10 bonus points as SUPRSCharger.

Earlier in the evening Chris Meyers won the 15 lap B-Main after Myles Maxon set fast time with a 14.337 second lap run in Time Trials.

The SUPRS racers move a little further east next week with the kick-off of the Empire State Super Series in New York.

Picked #77 in honor of "The King of Supermodifieds" Bentley Warren. I'll never forget that ragged old car (former swift 10pins) he used to muscle around The Steel Palace in the 70's.
