Bristol, TN – December 1, 2015…Rob Warren and Ray Sand, Jr. kept their lock on the Supermodified Ultimate Pavement Racing Series, (SUPRS), victory lane and kept their early season points battle going when they each picked up a win Wing Side Up Twin 25s at Bristol Motor Speedway.
Warren and Sand, Jr. swapped positions from the first twin race to the second, each came from last starting place for their second place finishes, and each was awarded the SUPRSCharger for advancing the most places from their starting spot.
Warren had a slightly tougher time hanging on for the win as he was challenged by Steve Callahan for most of the first feature’s 25 laps until Callahan lost the handle of his car and spun out in turn two with less than five laps to go. Sand, Jr. challenged Warren on the restart, but with worn out tires had his hands full just hanging onto his ride. Bob Gangwer nursed his ill-handling machine home for a podium finish.
“I was definitely worried with that last caution because I knew the champ was behind me so I gave it all I had the last couple of laps,” said Warren.
In the second twin feature race, Sand, Jr. got a great jump from outside of row one at the start and took the lead away from Steve Callahan exiting turn two. Warren made a hard charge from last place to go side by side with Callahan entering turn three on lap one but the two made contact and Warren was charged with the incident. Both drivers gathered it up but lost valuable time to Sand, Jr. Warren got by Callahan quickly but it was too late to catch Sand, Jr. even though he had a faster car and had to settle for second place.
It was the Rochester, NY native’s fifth win of the season and he said, “I got a great start on Steve, (Callahan), and then when he and Rob got together I was able to pull away.”
Callahan was able to hold onto third by a large margin over Gangwer and Domenic Gioia.
The SUPRS racers will be back in action next week with their NASCAR Heat winged sim supermodifieds for the 12th Annual Dion Parish Memorial at Rander Speedway. Full details can be found on the SUPRS schedule page
