Madera, CA – April 29, 2014… Ray Sand, Jr. of R0chester, NY took the pole position for the 10th Annual Supermodified Ultimate Pavement Racing Series Summit Classic 125 at Madera Speedway with a time of 11.928 Tuesday evening.
Sand, Jr. is looking to win his fifth Summit Classic 125 after a stellar season where he has racked up 14 feature wins and has sealed the lid on his ninth SUPRS Season Championship.
“I left a little out there tonight,” began Sand, Jr. “I think I could have gotten it a little faster, but I’ll take it.”
Sand, Jr. stated that starting on the pole for this race was important to finishing out a memorable season with SUPRS. He said, “This being the 10th Anniversary of SUPRS and the 10th Annual Summit, I really want to do well, it means a lot and it would be pretty special to win my fifth Summit this year.”
Bob Gangwer qualified second quick with a time of 11.950 and was surprised by his run. “I really can’t believe that I did this well because I generally stink at qualifying,” he said. “I’m not sure how I feel about starting outside going into turn one but it’s a long race and if I can just settle in behind Ray, I think I may have something at the end.”
While he qualified fifth quick, defending Summit Classic 125 Champion “Steady” Steve Callahan, by virtue of his guaranteed starting spot, will roll off on the inside of row three tomorrow night. “I really just blew it tonight, I had the car set up for long runs and didn’t get it switched back for time trials,” said the Cayuhoga Falls, OH racer.
Rob Warren is another driver that will take his guaranteed starting spot and will line up outside of row two after a disappointing qualifying run.
“Can I just take my warm up lap?” asked Warren. That lap would have been good enough to have put him outside of row one, but the laps that counted weren’t good enough to seal that front row bid. “I just plain screwed up and over drove it,” he said.
Chris Meyers qualified third fastest but will start inside of row three in fifth position following the guaranteed starters. “I didn’t put the qualifying set up in, then I was distracted and just couldn’t pull it off,” said Meyers.
“I’ve run faster laps here, but I’m ok with an 11.9,” said fourth fastest qualifier Carl Becker. Becker has had one of his best SUPRS seasons to date, racking up five feature wins and hanging on to a top five in Gold Crest Season Championship points.
SUPRS Summit Classic Week will continue with the 10th Annual Summit Classic 125 tomorrow night at Madera Speedway. The field will be filled by qualifying heat races and the 25 lap B-Main. Action gets underway at 7:00pm with practice, followed by drivers meeting at 7:45pm, Heats and B-Main at 8:00pm and final warm up session at 8:30pm. Driver introductions and pre-race festivities will lead up the to drop of the green flag for the 10th Annual Summit Classic 125 at 9:00pm.
