Sand, Jr. Holds off Maxon, Warren for Take First Mr. Online Supermodified Victory

June 24, 2014-Oswego, NY…After many years of trying, Ray Sand, Jr. is finally able to call himself Mr. Online Supermodified after winning the feature and accumulating the most points Tuesday night in the Supermodified Ultimate Pavement Racing Series 75 lap contest at Oswego Speedway.

Ray Sand Jr. crosses the finish line to win Mr. Online Supermodified

“The Sandman’s” second win of the 2014 Gold Crest Non-Wing Supermodified Championship season came after a race long battle with second and third place finishers “Mighty” Myles Maxon and “Rocket” Rob Warren.

The unique format for the 7th Annual Mr. Online Supermodified used a points system that combined the points that a driver earned from time trials, his heat finish and his feature finish. Going into the feature, only two points separated Ray Sand, Jr. and Myles Maxon and with the two arch rivals starting on the front row, it was anyone’s guess as to who would prove the strongest SUPRS hero and win the overall Mr. Online Supermodified Championship.

Maxon got the jump at the line but the “Sandman” had a masterful plan and was able to lure the current point leader right into the trap he’d laid in turn two.

“I knew I had to hold the bottom because obviously it’s the preferred line. Going into the first corner I was behind Myles on the first lap,” Sand, Jr. explained. “I could see his momentum wasn’t built up yet, so I used a trick I do on restarts, waited a little and then dove by him coming off of turn two.

That was my theory tonight, and after having to hold off Myles and Rob for 75 laps, I’m going to go have another one to celebrate being Mr. Online Supermodified”

“Mighty” Myles Maxon had been outwitted once again by his nemesis, and expressed his surprise at being caught in the “Sand” Trap.

“That’s the second time he’s done that to me on the start, i guess I didn’t learn the first time,” he said.

“But great job to Ray. I know Rob was pushing the whole race too, you could throw a blanket over the three of us. He (Warren) was keeping the heat on me, I was trying to keep the heat on Ray It was a great run, I just couldn’t do anything, I’ll certainly take it and move onto next week.”

Rob Warren continued his season of consistent runs and once again found himself standing on the podium at the end of a SUPRS race, but not before he found himself on the track a little too close for comfort in relation to Myles Maxon.

“The car was amazing right up until I whacked the 79,” he began. “I didn’t need too, I didn’t mean to, I was trying not to the whole race because I had some tremendous closing speeds and I just barely tapped Myles in the back-end and wrinkled the nose and that’s when the car started to push and they pulled away.”

Chris Meyers and Domenic Gioia completed the top five feature finishers while Myles Maxon set fast time and Bob Gangwer and Carl Becker won the heat races.

After all of the points were tallied up Ray Sand, Jr. was deemed 2014 Mr. Supermodified by a mere two points.
