February 21, 2023 – Martinsville, VA…It may have looked like a rigged election, but race sponsor Brad Keysor truly had to work hard for the win in the Supermodified Ultimate Pavement Racing Series, (SUPRS), 75 lap BMK Logistics Presidents’ Day Special feature for supermodified sim racing at Martinsville Speedway. After another hotly contested battle, regular podium finishers Dave Ohh led the most laps but finished second, while Zach Sears was third to Keysor after leading the first eight laps of the feature.
Plenty of Martinsville Madness
It was the first time in over 10 years that SUPRS had sanctioned a race at Martinsville and it showed. A total of 16 caution periods for 30 laps kept the night dragging on at a snails pace. And while the feature had some great racing moments and several two car battles, including for the lead dominated the high points of the 75 lap event, it was slowed by six cautions for a total of 20 laps. Wrecks and attrition thinned the field to seven finishers out of the 15 starters.
The format for the evening was nothing like SUPRS had ever run before and was designed to somewhat emulate the Chili Bowl Nationals, and SUPRS old New Year’s Eve 4-n-1 Bash. There were six Qualifying Heat Races run, using the “Random Daytime Start” and “Daytime Multiplier” features of the race server settings.
Along with a random starting grid for each race, those arbitrary settings added a fair share of raucous racing to the already hectic night. Each winner of a Qualifying Heat Race was locked in to the 75 lap feature, while all the other finishers moved on to another heat to try to win and get locked into the top six for the feature grid.
Heat races were 10 laps or six minutes, whichever came first. With drivers bumping and banging into each other, spinning out and often crashing as they tried to charge to the front of the six heat races, only two of the qualifiers went the lap distance before the time clock ran out.
Driver Zach Sears, Ryan Cloonan, Dave Ohh, Brad Keysor, Keith Powell, and Anthony Corsoniti won those heats, and made their final run-off in the feature a little easier being guaranteed a slightly better starting spots for the main event. To his credit, Corsoniti, driving the TsForecast.com #12 was the star of the Qualifying Heat Races. He finished fifth in the first one, then second in the next four races before winning the last one to lock in. He was the only driver to run all six and finish every one of the wacky races.
SUPRS All-Star Classic 200 Next
SUPRS next race is 200 laps of macadam mayhem on a ¼ mile paved oval, and the first race of the 2023 SUPRS Triple Crown of Supermodified Sim Racing presented by Icings on Top. The SUPRS 2023 13th Annual All-Star Classic 200 where only 12 cars make the 200 lap feature and everyone else loads up and goes home, is a one of a kind event on the SUPRS schedule and modeled after the famed Star Speedway International Classic.
