Sand, Jr. Swings into North Carolina Victory Lane

Ray Sand, Jr. Wins First Two North Carolina Swing Features

Caraway, NC – November 3, 2015…Ray Sand, Jr. of Rochester, NY  got off to a good start in the Supermodified Ultimate Pavement Racing Series, (SUPRS),  12th Annual North Carolina Swing Tuesday night at Dasera Speedway and Caraway Speedway  when he won the features at both tracks.

Even though he started both races from last place and while the outcome may have been the same, the path to victory lane was very different.

In the first feature at Dasera Speedway, Sand, Jr. made his way  into second place by lap six and set his sights immediately on leader Dave Brigandi.  For 34 of the scheduled 40 laps Sand, Jr. looked high and low for a way around. But it took Brigandi making a minor slip and brushing the wall to allow Sand, Jr. to steal the lead and the win with just six laps to go.

“I just want to say what a great job Dave did in that first race,” began Sand, Jr. “I was trying everything in the book to get by him and then he got the wall and it was the opening I needed.”

Brigandi, who held on to finish second stated, “I really didn’t know who was behind me. I was just trying to stay off the wall and then Ray got under me once and we did some rubbing, but that was just good racing. Then I hit that wall and all I thought was “man I threw that away.””

In the second race, a 50 lap show at Caraway Speedway, Sand, Jr. wasted no time going to the front and after capitalizing on mistakes made by every other driver at the start, took the lead on lap one and quickly pulled away from the field. He eventually won the race by nearly seven seconds over his nearest competitor, second place finisher Rob Warren.

Warren held no illusions that he could catch Sand for the win and focused instead on keeping his own car between the fences. “There was no way I was going to catch Ray,” said Warren. “He went by us on the start and I knew he was gone so I just did what I could to keep the car clean.”

The SUPRS stars move on to Concord Motorsports Park and Coastal Plains Speedway tonight for the third and fourth legs of the challenging North Carolina Swing. Practice for both races begins at 8:00pm with racing slated to go at 9:oo.
