Zach Sears Takes First Topless! 200 Pole Position as Ryan Cloonan Locks Down Front Row Start at Oswego Speedway

August 20, 2024 – Oswego, NY…2023 Supermodified Ultimate Pavement Racing Series, (SUPRS), Champion, Zach Sears, hasn’t run many races during the summer season, but he certainly hasn’t forgotten how to go fast, putting his ModSquad.info, Performance Fabrication #22 on the pole of the 20th Annual Topless! 200 for the first time in his career. Sears, of Elyria, OH, was the second driver on the track and set the high-water mark at 15.660 seconds. “Rapid” Ryan Cloonan from Oswego, NY, qualified late in the draw but his 15.731 lap was good enough for second quick and and the front row for the first time in his career.

It’s the first time since 2018 that someone other than Dave Ohh or Brad Keysor have sat on the front row for the storied 200 lap race. Keysor, who looking to lock down his second SUPRS Gold Crest Non-Wing Supermodified Season Championship, was third fastest with a time of 15.779 and will start third on the grid Wednesday.

Nine different drivers took time on Pole Night, with the tenth, rookie Brian Strickland of Michigan opted to scratch from Time Trials due to being under the weather with sickness.

Sears Plans to Go All Out

“It feels weird not having the other two in front of me,” said Zach Sears in reference to perennial front row starters Brad Keysor and Dave Ohh. After starting and finishing third last year, Sears, who makes his fifth start in the 200 lap grind, now has his best chance yet to win the race and seal the deal on his first Triple Crown of Supermodified Sim Racing presented by Icings on Top. “I’ve only run a couple of races this year, only had a few laps on the new tires and engine file, but I’m going to do my best to be like Dave Ohh and just go out early and try to lap the field,” said Sears.

He doesn’t think his starting spot changes much in the way of his approach to the race saying, “I’m just going to go out and run hard and try to keep the car in one piece.”

Keysor, Corsoniti Take Guaranteed Starter

Defending winner Brad Keysor, and N. Syracuse, NY resident, Anthony Corsoniti, have chosen to take their Guaranteed Starter spots will go away from third and fourth respectively, not so ironically, the same place they qualified for. While Keysor leads the points standings by 77 markers over Cloonan, Corsoniti is sitting third in points going in to the 200, and is one of four drivers to crack the 15 second bracket, and one of only two other drivers to have notched a mark in the win column this summer other than Brad Keysor.

Keysor, and Bob Gangwer are the only former winners that have qualified into the race. Keysor is a good bet to become the first four-time Topless! 200 winner as he hopes to repeat his back to back wins of 2020-2021. It’s a possibility that two-time winner Dave Ohh will show, start at the tail and attempt to join Ray Sand, Jr. as a three time Topless! 200 winner.

Gangwer, who goes away from fifth starting position, is in the hunt to join Ohh,  John Davidson, Rob Warren, and Myles Maxon as two time winners. In all 11 different drivers have won the prestigious 200 lap supermodified sim race at Oswego since it began in 2005.

20th Topless! 200 on Wednesday

The stage is now set for the granddaddy of all supermodified sim races, the SUPRS Topless! 200 at Oswego Speedway. The grand finale’ to SUPRS historic 20^th consecutive year of supermodified sim racing is 200 laps of strategy and speed modeled after the famed Oswego Speedway International Classic 200-the greatest of all real supermodified races.
