Third Straight Summit Classic 125 Pole for Dave Ohh at Madera Speedway

April 26, 2022 – Madera, CA…Dave Ohh of Union, CT flew to his third straight pole position for the Supermodified Ultimate Pavement Racing Series, (SUPRS), Summit Classic 125 on Tuesday Night at Madera Speedway. Ohh, who was one of the last qualifiers, stopped the clocks with a time of 11.332 seconds, for an average speed of 104.928 mph. For the second year in a row Brad Keysor will roll off from the outside of the front row with a lap time of 11.363 seconds for an average speed of 104.549. Keysor is looking for his third Summit Classic 125 win after locking down his first SUPRS Gold Crest Wing Supermodified Championship with his second quick time trial run.

For the second year in a row, Dave Ohh(#11) and Brad Keysor(#3) will lead the field to the green flag for the 18th Annual Summit Classic 125 Wednesday at Madera Speedway. (Victory Lane Art by BreezeGraphics.com)

Qualifying Draw Made Ohh’s Run Tough

Like last year, Dave Ohh was one of the last drivers to hit the track, and with the track temps a little warmer than everyone else, Ohh felt lucky to run the time he did.

“It’s nice to start on the front and control my own pace,” the Union, CT driver began. “I was lucky to squeak out that lap. It was tough going late with a late draw, I think it was 10 degrees hotter than when he rolled out on the track.

Ohh tried to improve on his eventual pole position lap time, which was his first official lap on his qualifying run, but the car got away from him just enough that he decided to stand on his time, and not the gas. “It really wasn’t that good of lap,” he said of his first. “I was hoping for better, but it got a little squirrely off of four and I just got it to the line. I saw it was good enough, and the lap wasn’t going to be good enough to beat that, so I just settled down and got it to the pits.”

Ohh was surprised at the amount of time cut off his pole speed from last year. “Pretty surprised, I wasn’t really too sure on what we were going to be able to do,” he said. “I found a few changes that helped us out and got the time down a bit. If we get a better draw next year, there might be another tenth in it. There’s definitely more left in it. Thanks to HeatFinder.net and the ModSquad.info.”

SpeedyMan Plans to Be Speedy

Ohh plans to take full advantage of his pole position, but still has last year’s dispointment of leading the first 86 laps only to lose connection, on his mind. This year, not only is he going to create a gap between himself and the rest of the field at the drop of the green flag, he’s also hoping that by going fast from the get-go, he will minimize his risk. “”Hopefully I can get some clean track and try to get some separation from Brad. He’s going to be hounding me all race My plan is to get out early, lead as many laps as possible and finish the race as quick as possible to minimize gap for errors. Really just go as fast as possible,” stated Ohh.

Keysor Not Disappointed

Two-Time Summit Classic winner, Brad Keysor just missed taking his first Summit Classic pole, but wasn’t disappointed by his lap. “I ran a really good time, Dave just ran a little bit better,” said the BMK Logistics sponsored driver. ” I’m not disappointed by that time. I’ll take a .363 here any day of the week. I’m not disappointed, obviously I’ve won before not starting from the pole, so maybe that’s a good thing for me.”

Keysor’s winning strategy won’t change from his prior wins, or that which has given him his second SUPRS championship, and he’ll stick to his plan to keep Dave Ohh in check for Wednesday’s race. “Really, since Dave’s come in tot he league, he’s changed the strategy where you gotta really go earlier, or you risk going down a lap,” he explained. “I have to make sure that there’s no separation from him, so the goal is to get in line quickly, get the tires warmed up, keep the brakes in line, and really run it down to the last 25 laps and see who’s got a a better car.”

Heat Races Are a Family Affair

Greg Breen(26) and Ryan Cloonan(13) each won their qualifying heat race for the 18th Annual Summit Classic 125. (Victory Lane Art by BreezeGraphics.com)

Greg Breen and Ryan Cloonan locked down the second row of the 18th Annual Summit Classic by winning their respective heat races. Breen of Liverpool battled with Anthony Corsoniti for most of the 10 lap race he won. The Liverpool, NY racer spun on his time trial attempt and nearly did the same in his heat, but held on for the win, giving him the third starting spot on the grid.

Breen’s nephew, Ryan Cloonan of Oswego, NY came from the last row in the second heat, battle Bob Gangwer for a couple of laps, then marched away after taking the lead and going on to win.

“You know, as his uncle, you’d think he’d (Cloonan), help me out more than he does,” Breen joked from victory lane after his win. After learning of his uncle’s comment after he won his heat race, Cloonan remarked, “He can have all the help he wants…after the race.” It’s clear that the two drivers, that share family blood, are competitors through and through, and will be two of top runners on Wednesday.

Both Breen and Cloonan will make their first Summit Classic 125 starts on Wednesday and will be joined by one other first time starter, Anthony Corsoniti. Corsoniti will take the green flag from inside of row three.

-The winning driver has led all 125 laps on at least seven known occasions, but due to incomplete records, it’s uncertain of the exact amount of times this has been done.

-According to available records, the furthest back any Summit Classic winner has started is sixth-Brad Keysor in 2019. Before that Steve Callahan held the distinction after starting third in 2013.

-The driver to lead the least amount of laps is Brad Keysor in 2021 when he took the lead from Rob Warren with four laps to go.

-The largest starting field for the Summit Classic was in 2007 when 19 drivers made the call to the green flag.
