Callahan and Maxon Score Wins in 2-Day Finale

“Steady” Steve Callahan picked up his second 2013-14 SUPRS ESS Regional Championship win at Elba Speedway.

Byron, NY – October 14, 2014…Steve Callahan and Myles Maxon were the big winners when the Supermodified Ultimate Pavement Racing Series finished out it’s Empire State Super Series schedule on October 13-14. Callahan battled with Maxon and early race leader Kyle Perry for the win in the Columbus Day Special at Elba Speedway while Maxon put his Ed Riley owned US Air Force Jetster into the lead with just 15 laps to go and went on to win at Byron2 Speedway.

For Callahan, the win at Elba was his second of the ESS season and enough to vault him into first place in the ESS standings ahead of Ray Sand, Jr. and Bob Gangwer after running out of the top five prior to the final two races. The Cayuhoga Falls, OH racer found New York state to his liking and after a six race series that spanned nearly 365 days claimed his first ever Empire State Super Series Championship.

“This is just awesome to come out on top,” exclaimed Callahan. “I had a great battle with Kyle at Elba once I finally caught him and knew Myles was right there and you can never count him out, then I struggled a little at Byron but was lucky enough to take fourth and the ESS Championship.”

Gangwer finished 20 points behind Callahan, while Carl Becker, Rob Warren and 2012-13 ESS Champion Ray Sand, Jr. filling out the top five in ESS points.

“The ESS season is so long you kind of forget about it,” Callahan continued. “After the points were announced I thought I might have a chance, but Bob still wasn’t that far behind going into the last race and he had a good run at Byron so I yeah, I’m as surprised as happy to take this Championship because it’s kind of nice to be doing well early in the season for a change.”

“Mighty” Myles Maxon continues to have impressive runs and has now won two of the three races run to date. “First off, congratulations to Steve on the ESS Championship, he had a great run last night and deserves it,” Maxon said. “Tonight, I got kind of lucky because Bob had kind of checked out while I worked to get around Carl and Dave early.

Myles Maxon mastered the flats of Byron2 Speedway to win the 2013-14 ESS finale.

“Bob was really getting off the corners good, but I was better in and the one time he didn’t get off the corner, I did and was able to get under him for the lead but I couldn’t shake him and I really had to play my cards right catching traffic with only a couple of laps to go. It was a fun race and I’ll take it.”

Maxon also set a new track record when mastered the flats of Byron2 after pulling into the pits late and with just one lap he clicked off a lap of 10.560.
