Dave Ohh, Rob Warren on Front Row for SUPRS 16th Summit Classic 125 at Madera Speedway
April 28, 2020 – Madera, CA…Dave Ohh’s “super spring” continued Tuesday night when he won the pole position for the Supermodified Ultimate Pavement Racing Series, (SUPRS), 16th Annual Summit Classic 125 at Madera Speedway. Ohh, of Union, CT had a lap time of 11.619 in the TMS Wolfpack #11 which is the fastest pole time since Joe Achzet set the existing Madera Speedway supermodified track record in 2017. Rob Warren of Pulaski, NY will start the Summit Classic from outside of row one for the fourth time in five years after stopping the clocks with a lap time of 11.780.
Just One Lap
Ohh was the first qualifier and took just one lap after botching the start of his second, but it was plenty fast and held through all of the other nine qualifier. “I think I got lucky there,” he said. “Brad, and I know Kyle, were very fast in practice and I messed myself up, I really pedaled it off four and from there I knew I had no shot at a good second lap so I pulled in.”
Could he have gone even faster? He believes that there was plenty of “oomph” left in his “Black Beauty” roadster. “If I hadn’t of bobbled I think I would have had a low five.”
After missing time trials in his first Summit Classic last year, Ohh knows it’s better to start up front. “It definitely feels good to have a good starting spot for such a long race and it should help in conserving my tires,” he said. “I hope I can gap a little bit of the field, because I expect it to be close based on times here tonight.”
The driver that has won eight of the last nine SUPRS winged supermodified features reiterated once more what his main concern is going into the 125 lap grind. “I don’t’ think lapped traffic will be too bad, everyone has their heads on here,” he said. “I think the big thing will be tire wear, you can burn the tires up if you’re really get after it.”
Close Again for Warren
For the fourth time in five years, Rob Warren was “oh so close” to taking the pole and for a moment, race officials, and the announcer, thought that he may have had done just that after a glitch in scoring erased Ohh’s time. Being on the pole is nice, but not being there isn’t the biggest worry Warren has as he prepares for another Summit Classic.
“It’s a 125 lap race and I usually jump right in at the bit,” said the 2017 winner. “I’m not patient when it comes to this place, and I usually burn the tires up or something weird happens. I think last year I was leading and a rookie came off the turn two wall and collected me and Brad got the lead. That’s racing.”
While he’s not always been one to take it easy, this year may be different as he has a very fast driver starting to his left. “I think I’m going to try to tuck behind Speedy, (Ohh), and keep him in site,” said the All-Time SUPRS feature winner. “He’s so fast, it’s hard to maintain and not burn your stuff up while he’s just conserving his. I should just not drive it as hard as I want to, but I figure my foot will say different.”
Perry, Keysor Win Heat Races
Kyle Perry of Fulton, NY and Brad Keysor of Liverpool, NY each won a qualifying heat race. Both were two of the fastest drivers in hot laps leading up to qualifying, but both also struggled on at least one of their laps which relegated them to the heats.
Perry will make his first Summit Classic 125 start on Wednesday and has been working hard to get the car right. “I’ve been up last the last couple of nights working on set ups,” he said. “I’ve been getting help from Brad and making small tweaks to be as fast and consistent as I can be.”
For Keysor, not being on the front row was disappointing. “I had a faster car but really messed myself up in qualifying,” stated the Southern Hills Storm Football Team sponsored driver. “Congrats to Rob on making the front row again. I would have liked to not have had to run the heat. All in all thought it’s a good night and it’s in one piece so I’ll be here tomorrow.”
Powell Takes Guaranteed Starter
Keith Powell, who qualified seventh out of 10 cars present, used the Guaranteed Starter award he receieved after winning the 2020 Randy Witkum Memorial at Jennerstown Speedway. Powell, who will grid his Icings on Top “Mayfield Missile” in third place on the inside of row two, is hoping that this is the year he pulls down the Summit Classic 125 win. “I’ve been close a couple times and I love that it’s a long race and it’s a place that you have to save car and tires, so it fits in my wheel house,” he said.
“I’m hoping we have a top four car, but there’s a lot of fast guys this year, so it’s a tough deal. Hopefully this will be the year. Good luck to everyone tomorrow. Hopefully we have a clean race and if it falls into my wheelhouse, we’ll be there again.”
