Wins by Nearly 1/2 Track at Sunrise Raceway

Pinellas Park, FL – February 27, 2014…  Kevin Timmins can now add his name to the list of Supermodified Ultimate Pavement Racing Series winners after picking up a the win in the shortened 50 lap feature at Sunrise Raceway Thursday night. Kyle Perry had his best finish ever coming home in second while Steve Callahan crossed the line in third.

“This really feels special,” said the always calm and collected driver of the BreezeGraphics.com roadster.

After an extended delay to the racing festivities due to server and connection issues, time trials were scratched and the field lined up for the feature based on handicaps. That put Timmins and Dave Brigandi on the front row and Timmins took the lead from a slow starting Brigandi to lead into turn one.

Timmins stretched his lead to a half second before Steve Callahan was able to real him in.

Kevin Timmins shoots across finish line to win at Sunrise Raceway

Kevin Timmins grabbed his first ever SUPRS feature at Sunrise Raceway during Florida Speedweeks.

Callahan got a little anxious and slapped the wall slowing his progress which played into Timmins favor who then went on to become the fourth different winner in as many nights of Speedweeks racing.

“I don’t know if I could have held everyone off for 50 laps but it felt pretty good tonight,” stated Timmins. He went on saying, “I had a pretty good lead there and the laps were smooth but then I tapped the wall pretty good and I thought ‘oh no here they come,’ but i was able to gather it up and get back in a rhythm to hold on.”

The thoughful winner stopped to reflect on his first ever feature win, “Coming off a top five last night I wasn’t too sure about this track, I just keep trying to do my best. I really want to thank everybody for giving me so much encouragement and advice. This really feels good.”

Kyle Perry of Fulton, NY brought his Bellinger’s Auto Sales racer home for a second place; his highest feature finish ever. He was quick to congratulate the winner after the race, “First I wanna say BIG congrats to Kevin because I know he’s been working hard at this and it’s good to see him win one.”

Perry was happy to hang onto second in another competitive SUPRS race. “I knew I didn’t have anything for Kevin, he took off, so my only hope was that he’d get into the wall or something,” he said. “Bobby and Steve were really coming before the race ended, so I knew I wasn’t going to hold onto second for too long.”

The accolades for Timmins continued when third place finisher and New Smyrna winner Steve Callahan commented. “Big congrats to Kevin, that is just awesome and to Kyle too. It’s always cool to see first time winners and different guys running up front,” expressed the Cuyuhoga Falls, OH racer.

Callahan went on to say, “This is a really cool place. You have plenty of room to run and you can pretty much pick whatever line you want, so I was having a lot of fun out there tonight.”

“I had a really good run with Kyle there I got around him and started to track Kevin down,” explained Callahan, who was the only real threat to Timmins all night long. “Then I tapped the wall and Kyle got back around me, then Dave got back around me so I had to get back at it again and Kevin was gone.”

“Even if the race would have gone the distance, I don’t know that I had anything for Kevin. I’m just tickled to death for him,” Callahan said.

“Mighty” Myles Maxon, 2009-10 Winged Gold Crest Champion, made his first appearance of the year and brought the Tamarack Golf Club sponsored ride home in a respectable fifth.

The fifth and final night of the 2014 SUPRS Florida Speedweeks takes place at USA International Speedway tomorrow night February 28. Practice begins at 8:00pm, Time Trials go off at 8:30 and the feature takes the green at 8:45pm.
