October 31, 2022 – Goshen, IN…The Supermodified Ultimate Pavement Racing Series, (SUPRS), will celebrate 19 consecutive years of “Supermodified Sim Racing for the Right Reasons” on November 1, 2022 on the dirt of SUPRS Twisted Metal Raceway.
Remembering Where It Started
The oldest supermodified sim racing sanction plans to remember their past with a NASCAR Heat race using the first mod built in-house for SUPRS called “NHSM”, (NASCAR Heat SuperModified). Kevin Marine, of St. Paul, MN had little knowledge of the real supermodifieds when he joined SUPRS in 2005, but enjoyed the fun, fair, and competitive nature of the fledgling league enough to volunteer his skills at modding games.
Kevin, who went by the nickname “Shaker”, got his feet wet by making small tweaks the the PSTM mod built by Mike Jackson of DSES modding. With Mike’s permission and blessing, Marine “SUPRS-ized the old PSTM car and made it look more like a real supermodified.
Once he had that down, plans were launched to create a brand new version that could represent a real supermodified as closely as possible in these early days of sim racing modifications. The NHSM modification was the first “ground up” SUPRS offering and was released in February of 2006. It was designed with two types of chassis. Drivers could choose from the ISMA, or east coast style supermodified, or the SRL, or west coast style chassis in game. Real supermodified racer, and SUPRS member Joey “The Jersey” Jet Payne had a large influence on the outcome of the mod.
Doin’ It in the Dirt for SUPRS 19th Anniversary Special at Twisted Metal Raceway
SUPRS will be celebrating the 19th anniversary of the sanction on the dirt at SUPRS Twisted Metal Raceway, (AKA-SUPRS TM), by Mike Jackson of Dirt Sim Editing Site, (DSES), and edited by John “Bud” Flath.
SUPRS Twisted Metal is the dirt version of the fictional track also built by Mike Jackson. It’s a wide, semi-banked 7/16 mile with multiple grooves, including a usable “cushion.” Drivers will not only have their hands full dodging dirt clods, and trying to keep their 800 horsepower supermodified under control, but the track is lined with a tricky inside wall that is jagged, and juts out into the groove here and there throughout the corners. It can jump out and grab the cars as they go by if they get too close, and many a driver has ended up in a precarious position while trying to navigate the long sweeping turns.
The last time SUPRS raced here was 2015 for the April Fools Fast 50 where Myles Maxon established the track record of 14.925 and went on to lead 36 laps of the feature. Maxon won the race, which was just under 14 minutes, over Ray Sand, Jr., Steve Callahan, Chris Meyers, Rob Warren, Bob Gangwer, Carl Becker, and Dave Brigandi. In 2009, Canadian Jamie Hartley won the only other SUPRS race contested on the dirt at Twisted Metal Raceway.
