“Rocket” Rob Warren Waves the Stars and Stripes From SUPRS Victory Lane at Flag Day 45
Oswego, NY – June 16, 2016…Rob Warren of Pulaski, NY was the star-spangled winner of the Supermodified Ultimate Pavement Racing Series,(SUPRS), Flag Day 45 Tuesday night after advancing seven positions. Bob Gangwer and Joe Achzet joined Warren on the podium.
It was Warren’s second feature win this season and the second week in a row that the SUPRS competitors have had to chase the 1st to Finish Race Servers roadster across the line.
First of all, I have to apologize to Domenic,” began the defending SUPRS Gold Crest Non-Wing Champion. “My frame rates were all over the place and I was coming up behind Dom and Chad to lap them then I got into Dom because I couldn’t see where I was at it was skipping so bad.”
Early in the evening, “Rocket” Rob, as he’s known to fellow SUPRS racers, wasn’t too sure if he had anything for any of the other SUPRS racers. “Really the car just did not feel right,” he said. “I kept adjusting and adjusting and then I realized it was me over driving, so I settled down and worked on hitting my marks. After I figured that out was a pretty fun race.”
When Bob Gangwer came across the line, it was much to his own amazement. “I have to tell you, it wasn’t the best car but I was lucky enough to bring it home in one,” he said. “I’ll be honest, Joe was a lot faster than me, but he did the wall smacker there on the front stretch and I was just able to get under him in one and hold him long enough that I could pull away.”
“I’m just happy for a second,” Gangwer continued. “I have to figure something out for early in the race and restarts, the car is so loose that I really have to tip-toe and on cold tires it’s pretty hairy, but I had a lot of fun and thought maybe I had something for Rob towards the end when he got into lapped traffic Congratulations to him on the win.”
With a car that he finally found to his liking, Joe Achzet had a good run going until things got tight among the top three of Ray Sand, Jr., Warren and himself.
“The car was pretty good until I had to gather it up early when I thought I could pin Rob in behind Ray,” explained the GraphX sponsored sim racer. “I just touched Rob a bit and I think I knocked the toe out because it got pretty evil under braking.”
“It really felt pretty good to have a comfortable car under me for a change. Once the top two were gone though, they were gone and I was just hoping that Keith couldn’t catch me,” concluded Achzet.
Warren led the most laps after early leader Ray Sand, Jr. fell to the back with a very loose race car. Sand, Jr. eventually dropped out of the race. Just two cautions for a total of 10 laps were recorded although the race a couple of rough starts that were called back.
Heat wins went to Ray Sand, Jr. and Warren.
