With only two weeks left in the 2014-15 SUPRS Gold Crest Wing Championship schedule, there’s no slowing down for the competitors that are looking to gain those last few points. Racing over the course of two nights, the online supermodified racers will have their work cut out for them with 250 total feature laps to be run using wing and non-wing supermodifieds at two distinctly different tracks.

Starting at The Salem Speedway on April 21 they will race 75 lap features in each style of online supermodified. Ray Sand, Jr. will be the man to watch as he is the most recent winner in the non-wing supermodifieds. The last SUPRS non-wing feature held at Salem came on July 7, 2014 when Sand, Jr. won the opening salvo of the Indiana Supermod Week.  In that particular race, an exciting battle among the top four of  Sand, Jr., Rob Warren, Myles Maxon, and Steve Callahan developed almost immediately from the drop of the green flag. In a thrilling wheel to wheel, nerf bar to nerf bar contest of skill, it was anyone’s guess what driver was going to come out on top at the end of 50 laps.

Carl Becker has had his fair share of success on the banks of this southern Indiana institution as well, taking his Dowker Titanium Roadster to a wing supermodified win on November 12, 2013. The same holds true of Callahan as he raced to a non-wing win in 2010.

Moving north to Indianapolis Raceway Park for the last night of the five race series that started with the Harvest of Speed Season Opener at LaPorte Speedway this past October, the SUPRS racers will run two fifty lap features and one driver will leave the Hoosier State as champion of the Indyana Supermod Challenge.

When it comes to winning at IRP, Ray Sand, Jr. and Myles Maxon hold the distinction of being nearly unstoppable, whether it be in wing or non-wing supermodified competition. Of the 18 SUPRS races contested so far at IRP the two have won half of them. Sand, Jr. has three non-wing wins and two wing supermodified victories, while Maxon has three wing wins and one non-wing checkered. John Davidson and Bob Gangwer are the only other drivers to come remotely close to that with Gangwer having three total victories and Davidson two. Randy Ritskes, Gary Waldron, Joey Payne, and Devin Gee each have one win at this historic 5/8ths mile track.

With all the marks in the win column at Indianapolis Race Park, it should come as no surprise that Maxon and Sand, Jr. also have the most Indyana Supermod Challenge Championship.

According to the available records, each driver has won the Challenge three times with Sand, Jr. having done it the last three years in a row. It’s probable that Maxon also won in 2010 when he was crowned SUPRS Gold Crest Wing Champion, but no records have been found to prove it. Maxon is now leading the 2014-15 Indyana Supermod Challenge point standings with Chris Meyers in second and Bob Gangwer third.

The overall Indyana Supermod Challenge Champion will be awarded 10 SUPRS Gold Crest Wing Championship points and receive a five-pound bag of  award winning Yoder’s Indiana popcorn.

Practice both nights begins at 8:00pm. Time Trials follow at 8:45pm with racing set to start at 9:00pm.

About KTimmins77

Supermodified fan for over 30 years. Heard about this MOD and had to give it try! Been doing graphic art and design for along time. Owner of Breezegraphics Supermodified Art. Specializing in Vinyl Stickers and Window Clings. So designing my own paint scheme is right up my alley. :) Looking to enjoy some SUPRS racing and meet some new friends. Picked #77 in honor of "The King of Supermodifieds" Bentley Warren. I'll never forget that ragged old car (former swift 10pins) he used to muscle around The Steel Palace in the 70's.
