Double Dip of Daring for Supermodified Sim Racers at Wing Side Up Twin 25s

Wing Side Up Twin 25s at Bristol Motor Speedway require double dip of daring and nerves from SUPRS racers

November 26, 2018 – Goshen, IN…The drivers of the Supermodified Ultimate Pavement Racing Series, (SUPRS), put on their bravest faces this week as they head to Bristol Motor Speedway for the 15th Annual Wing Side Up Twin 25s supermodified sim race. This event is one of the longest running in SUPRS history and while one of the favorites of the racers, it is also a show that requires drivers to dare disaster as they run sub 11 second laps on the steeply banked half-mile.

The Wing Side Up Twins at Bristol Motor Speedway are bad and bodacious. But this BreezeGraphics.com poster is pure beauty!

SUPRS Co-Founder is Long-Time Sponsor

SUPRS Co-Founder Bob Gangwer has sponsored the event since it’s inception through his website Bob Gangwer’s Wing Side Up on the World Wide Web, and it’s an event that near and dear to his heart.

“I grew up watching supermodifieds on big banked tracks like Winchester, Salem, and Toledo,” explained Gangwer. “Those were the scariest, craziest, most thrilling races I ever saw because the speed was so intense and the margin for error was so slim.”

“I always wanted to bring that nerve-wracking thrill into sim racing and when we started SUPRS in 2004, Bristol was really the only track that even came close those the ones I grew up at,” he said. “Now that we’ve run rFactor, there’s some other options out there, and we’ve considered moving the race, but everyone really likes the challenge at Bristol. So I don’t see this race going anywhere as long as I’m involved.”

Big Bonuses at Bristol

Multiple bonuses like the  SUPRS Double Down, SUPRSChallenge, and SUPRSCharger, increase the rewards, and the risks at the Wing Side Up Twin 25s. As drivers vie for valuable Gold Crest Wing Championship points in two short 25 lap features, they might come out ahead, or could fall further behind in the points chase.

For example:

  • The SUPRSCharger is in effect for both features. This awards ten bonus points awarded to the driver that improves the most positions from his starting spot.
  • The SUPRSChallenge pays 20 bonus points to any driver that starts last and wins either feature.

But the Double Down  is a bonus that can quickly change a driver’s fortunes. If a driver can win both 25 lap features he gets 25 bonus points added to his Championship total!

While all of those may seem somewhat easy, the Double Down has only been claimed twice, (even though Gary Waldron won both 38 lap features at the first event in 2004, there was no such thing as the Double Down). Doug Heveron and John Davidson are the only drivers other than Waldron to have won both features on the same night. Heveron doing it in 2007 and Davidson in 2012.

Nobody has ever won the SUPRSChallenge at the Wing Side Up Twin 25s.

Two Types of Supermodifieds

Once again this year the SUPRS racers will need to excel at driving both wing and non-wing supermodifieds if they want to take home a good finish. The winged supermods race first and are certainly thrilling. But it’s the non-wing supers, with less downforce, and drag, that tend to be the more unpredictable car of the night. Adding to the edginess of the event is the second feature with the non-wing supermodifieds takes the green flag in the early evening and uses a random draw to set the starting line-up.

More Details

The SUPRS racers are ready to double the action and double the fun on the big banks of Bristol Motor Speedway  on Tuesday November 27, 2018. Official practice starts at 8pm with the Driver’s Meeting at 8:30pm. The drivers strap into their winged supermodifieds for Time Trials at 8:45 and the racing begins at 9pm. The non-wing supermodified 25 lap feature should start at about 9:30pm.

Last SUPRS Race of October is Black Kat Klassic at Myrtle Beach

Share SUPRS:

October 27, 2018 – Goshen, IN…The racers of the Supermodified Ultimate Pavement Racing Series, (SUPRS), close out the month of October this week with the popular Black Kat Klassic at Myrtle Beach Speedway that includes a full format of time trials, Crack the Whip race for the Fast 4 qualifiers, heat races and a 50 lap rFactor supermodified sim racing feature.

Second Year at Myrtle Beach

After running the race for much of its existence at Decatur Speedway, series officials moved the Black Kat Klassic to Myrtle Beach Speedway. In what proved to be a thrilling race, Myrtle Beach was once again chosen as the host for the rFactor race. With a rough surface, steeply banked corners and lap times just a whisker over 16 seconds, this track last year produced plenty of hair-raising thrills.

Rodrigues Looks to End Black Kat Curse

Last year, Nelson Rodrigues of Stoneham, MA looked to have the, well, cat in the bag, so to speak. But with just two laps to go his luck ran out and he spun out handing the lead and win to Rob Warren.

It’s a safe assumption that Rodrigues is hoping to turn that misfortune around and always seems to do well at tracks with high-banks and sustained speeds like Myrtle Beach Speedway.

Mojo is Back for Warren

Last week reigning SUPRS Gold Crest Wing Supermodified Champion Rob Warren got back into the groove of winning. Locked out of the winner’s circle for the first five races of the season, Warren got his mojo back when he cleaned up at Southern National Raceway Parka nd Concord Motorsports Park on the second night of the 15th Annual North Carolina Swing.

Last year, with his win over Rodrigues, Warren became the fifth two-time winner of the Black Kat Klassic in SUPRS history. He joined Ray Sand, Jr., Myles Maxon, Carl Becker and John Davidson on that list. In all there have been just seven winners total of this race.

More Details

The brave SUPRS daredevils take on The Black Kat Klassic October 30, 2018 at the 1/2 mile Myrtle Beach Speedway. Practice starts at 8:00pm. Time Trials follow at 8:45pm and hair-raising racing gets under way with a special Crack the Whip race for the Fast4 qualifiers at 9:05pm.

SUPRS 2018 North Carolina Swing Has Over 325 Laps of Feature Racing in Three Nights

Share SUPRS:

October, 19 – Goshen, IN…The Supermodified Ultimate Pavement Racing Series, (SUPRS), 2018 North Carolina Swing puts supermodified sim racers through their paces over the course of three nights at five tracks, two sim racing platforms and over 325 laps of feature racing October 23-25. This intense string of races is considered by most as the toughest multi-race swing of the season and this year could be even more so with a new influx of skilled racers going up against the SUPRS regulars.

5 Tracks, 3 Nights, 2 Platforms, ONE Champion at SUPRS 2018 North Carolina Swing. (Poster by BreezeGraphics.com)

Different Tracks, Tough Format

All of the races are in North Carolina. Four real tracks, and one fictional track make up the interesting mix of varying venues. With the swing using both NASCAR Heat and rFactor, each track has its own nuances that each driver either finds to his liking or struggles to figure out. In addition, the format of handicapping based on prior finishes, guarantees an exciting race where every driver has to work hard at each track to keep his hopes alive for an overall North Carolina Swing Championship.

The series kicks off Tuesday, November 23 with NASCAR Heat at Dasera Speedway and Caraway Speedway, moves to Concord Motorsports Park and Southern National Raceway Park the next night with rFactor. The North Carolina Swing then finishes off  at Hickory Motor Speedway on Thursday, November 25 where the winner of challenging “Hickory Hustle 75″ rFactor finale’ will be crowned North Carolina Swing Champion.

Possible Twist to Swing

Certainly, one of the more interesting possibilities this year, is the fact that several newcomers may dictate the outcome of which drivers get invited to The Hickory Hustle. Because the first two shows on night one of the North Carolina Swing are part of the 14 race SUPRS NASCAR HeatFinder.net Open Show Challenge, the added twist of having drivers that excel at this particular sim racing platform will keep the driver going for the Gold Crest Wing Championship on their toes.

Big Bonus Points Available

With 15 SUPRS Gold Crest Wing Supermodified Championship bonus points on the line to the driver that can pull off this challenging feat, the SUPRS Stars are sure to be out in full force trying to get into the invitation only Hickory Hustle.

The Hickory Hustle takes the top eight in points after the first four races and pits them against each other with a random start and within the tight confines of Hickory Motor Speedway. It’s just one more reason the North Carolina Swing crown is one of the hardest and most sought after for all the SUPRS drivers.

Warren Going for Second in a Row

Last year, Rob Warren become just the second driver in SUPRS history to win the North Carolina Swing more than once. This year he could become the second driver to win the North Carolina Swing back to back.  If he does so he joins Myles Maxon, who tops the list of North Carolina Swing champions at three, and who was the first to claim the crown back to back in 2009-2010.

Former NC Swing Champs Expected to Compete

Of the current crop of SUPRS racers, the aforementioned reigning SUPRS Gold Crest Wing Supermodified Champion Rob Warren, 2013-14 North Carolina Swing Champion Bob Gangwer, and 2012-13 NC Swing Champ Carl “Bonzai” Becker, along with 2016-17 winner Steve Callahan are all expected to compete again this year.
