SUPRS Racers Gear Up for Non-Wing Summer Season

May 23, 2017 – Goshen, IN…The Supermodified Ultimate Pavement Racing Series, (SUPRS), waves the green flag on the start of a new Gold Crest Non-Wing Championship with the Port City Kick-Off Tuesday, June 6, 2017 at Oswego Speedway .

For the first time since 2012, the Port City Kick-Off is 50 laps instead of 75, making it even more important for the drivers to find the fast line as quickly as possible for a good start to the new season.

The 13th Annual Port City Kick-Off is the first race of a 14 race season schedule, and while the schedule is only slightly different from last year, there are several subtle, but important changes to the SUPRS rFactor mod that include new tires and upgraded brakes. Also, as SUPRS continues to strive to have the most accurately detailed version of Oswego Speedway, racers and fans will notice a few changes to SUPRS already extremely detailed Oswego Speedway for rFactor.

Watch, Listen, Enjoy

When the supermodified sim racers take to the track for the first non-wing race of the season, they’ll do so in front of a worldwide audience thanks to SUPRS LIVE! Some Port City History

Clinton Cyr SUPRS Port City Kick-Off winner

Clinton Cyr kicked off the SUPRS non-wing season with a win with barely enough fuel to finish.

Last year Clinton Cyr won his second career SUPRS feature after a great battle with Ray Sand, Jr., the 2015 Port City Kick-Off winner. Cyr raced just one more time with SUPRS after his Port City win, retiring from SUPRS competition after the Jim Shampine Memorial.

Sand, Jr’s second Port City Kick-Off win in 2015 was SUPRS first rFactor race and he joined Myles Maxon and John Davidson as a multi-time winner. Maxon has more opening day wins than any other SUPRS racer with three.

In the last ten years of the race the have been seven different winners with Sand, Jr. and Maxon keeping it from being 10 in 10.  In all, there have been eight different drivers in 12 years sitting in SUPRS Victory Lane on opening night. Sean Gibbs, Jim Crannell, Bob Gangwer, Rob Warren, and Jeff Weber all have one win.

Powell Defends, Weber Returns

The Whistler VL 2016

Keith Powell collected his third feature win in a row and became the first SUPRS driver to ever win The Whistler more than once.

Carrollton, Ohio’s Keith Powell will have his hands full trying to defend his 2016 Gold Crest Non-Wing Championship crown against a group of tough group of competitors. Last year, after an impressive season where he rattled off three big wins in a row, Powell became the eighth different SUPRS Gold Crest Non-Wing Champion. After a string of three years where Ray Sand, Jr. dominated, Powell’s championship made him the fourth different driver in the last four years.

Winning the Port City Kick-Off seems like a good way to win a Gold Crest Non-Wing Championship, but the odds are stacked against any driver hoping to do so. In the 13 year history of the race, just one driver, (Myles Maxon in 2014), that has won the opening night race has gone on to win the season championship!

With SUPRS using rFactor for the non-wing season beginning in 2015, the competition has become increasingly tougher. Making it even more so this year is the return of 2013 Port City Kick-Off winner and 2011 Topless! 200 pole-sitter Jeff Weber to SUPRS competition. Weber has been on the road working for several years but the Indiana sim racer is ready to get back behind the wheel of his online supermodified.

The 13th Annual Summit Classic 125 is the 41st race of the 2016-2017 SUPRS Gold Crest Wing Championship XIII and the second leg of the SUPRS Supermodified Sim Racing Triple Crown.

In preparation for the 13th running of the Summit Classic 125 on Wednesday, there will be a Test-N-Tune Sunday where drivers will be in both their wing and non-wing supermodified sim racing cars. The track opens at 8pm.

Madness Begins Monday

Clinton Cyr winner of SUPRS Monday Madera Madness rFactor race

Clinton Cyr held off Ray Sand, Jr. after a late race restart to win his second SUPRS feature of the season.

Then on April 24, the SUPRS Monday Madera Madness non-wing supermodified 40 lapper take place. Practice begins at 7:30pm for this race that is now in its second year. Last year’s event had just two cautions and Clinton Cyr won after a thrilling three-lap shootout to the finish with Ray Sand, Jr.

On Tuesday,  13th Annual Summit Classic 125. Originally scheduled for Tuesday, the invitation only Cherry Breaker 63 for drivers that have never won a SUPRS wing supermodified feature, was canceled due to lack of eligible drivers leaving drivers to focus on Time Trials for the 13th Annual Summit Classic 125. Group Practice on Tuesday begins at 8pm and the battle to see which two-drivers will be locked into the race and start on the front row starts at 9pm with single car Time Trials.

Finally on Wednesday, the grand finale for SUPRS happens and the drivers will try to add their name to the long list of winners of the Summit Classic 125.  Practice will begin at 7:00pm with the green flag dropping on the 13th Annual Summit Classic 125 starting field at 9:00pm.

Tough to Win

In 12 prior years only five drivers have won this challenging race with Ray Sand, Jr. being the all-time winner with five. John Davidson has three Summit Classic wins and was the first driver to win back to back. The only other driver with multiple wins is Bob Gangwer, a two-time back to back winner. Gangwer is the defending winner of the race. Steve Callahan, (2013), and Myles Maxon, (2010), are also former winners.

Warren Wraps Up Third SUPRS Championship

This year when the non-wing supermodifieds hit the track on Monday Rob Warren will seal the deal on his second SUPRS Gold Crest Championship and first Gold Crest Wing Championship. Warren has previously won the SUPRS Gold Crest Non-Wing Championship and has a Silver Crest Championship to his credit.

Last year, Warren sat on the front row for the Summit Classic for the second straight year and is a favorite to win at Madera in the 125 lap event on Wednesday. With 14 wins so far this season, he could also set a new SUPRS record for most wins in a season, topping the man he’s tied with Ray Sand, Jr. if he picks up win 15.

After a Year Away SUPRS is Back at Dover for St. Patrick’s Day Race

SUPRS Back at Dover Downs International Speedway for St. Patrick’s Day Grab 0′ the Green

March 12, 2017 – Goshen, IN….After a year away, the Supermodified Ultimate Pavement Racing Series, (SUPRS), is returning to Dover Downs International Speedway for the popular St. Patrick’s Day Grab o’ the Green supermodified sim race.

Find your Pot of Gold with great promotional posters from BreezeGraphics.com

In 2016, the race moved to Mosport Speedway to take advantage of SUPRS rFactor based non-wing supermodified mod. Rookie Clinton Cyr of Florida won his first SUPRS career feature in a 50 lap feature that went 37 laps before the first caution flag flew. Joe Achzet and Ray Sand, Jr. finished on the podium the only time the race ran north of the US border.

This year SUPRS returns to the track that has hosted more St. Patrick’s Day Grab o’ the Green races than any other, Dover Downs International Speedway. A full slate of supermodified sim racing concludes with a 25 lap feature.

St. Patrick’s Day Grab o’ the Green History

In the first three years of the race Dover Downs played host to the online supermodifieds with wins going to Kevin Marine, Randy Ritskes and Kris Heveron.

For the 2007-08 and 2008-09 seasons, after a three-year run on the mile, SUPRS officials decided to move away from the longer tracks and the St. Patrick’s day event moved to Stafford Mountain Speedway as part of the Empire State Super Series races.  Bud Flath and Ray Sand, Jr. picked up the wins at the high-banked half-mile New York venue.

Continuing with a focus on short tracks, the race moved west of the Mississippi to Buckley Speedway in California. Canadian Jamie Hartley was victorious in the one and only time the St. Patrick’s Day Grab o’ the Green ran there.

From 2011-2013 SUPRS dropped the race simply due to a shorter schedule. It then returned in 2014 to Dover and Steve Callahan became the seventh different winner of the race.

In fact, there’s never been a repeat winner of the St. Patrick’s Day Grab o’ the Green and that is likely to continue this year with only the aforementioned Callahan, and Rob Warren, (2015), being the only former winners expected to compete. Both have struggled in pre-race testing, leaving the door open for one of the other hard-charging SUPRS drivers to score their first St. Patrick’s Day win.

Critical Juncture in Points Battle

With just 10 races left in the SUPRS Gold Crest Wing Championship XIII campaign, the SUPRS racers have a lot to lay on the line as they take on the “Monster Mile” at Dover Downs International Speedway. Rob Warren has led the chase most of the season and continues to hold a 136 point advantage. However, at one point in the last five races, Joe Achzet had whittled that lead down to as little as 36 points.

Because he’s 197 points out of first place, it will be tough for Keith Powell to win the championship. He still has a mathematical chance though and certainly has a shot at moving past Achzet who is just 61 points ahead. At the same time, Powell, who is the 2016 SUPRS Gold Crest Non-Wing Champion, will have to keep an eye on Bob Gangwer who is fourth and only 91 points behind him.

Further back, there’s several drivers that will need to have good finishes if they want to move up in the standings, including Kyle Clark, who sits 53 points behind Steve Callahan and just out of the top five. Meanwhile, Carl Becker and Domenic Gioia have just 18 points separating them in the battle for seventh overall and there’s not many points separating positions 10-13.

Fun for Fans

Because this year the St. Patrick’s Day Grab o’ the Green is rFactor based, fans can catch the action via SUPRS LIVE! as drivers challenge the “Monster Mile” in their wing supermodifieds. Fans, friends, and family members can view live timing, scoring and track telemetry and see which of their favorite SUPRS racer finds the pot of gold by visiting www.SUPRS.net/site/live.

Practice for the SUPRS St. Patrick’s Day Grab o’ the Green at Dover Downs International Speedway begins at 8pm. Time Trials will take place at 8:30pm while Racing begins with heat races at 8:45pm. The field takes the green flag for the feature around 9:00pm.

SUPRS in CA for President’s Day Special

Share SUPRS:

February 18, 2017 – Clovis, CA….The Supermodified Ultimate Pavement Racing Series,(SUPRS), heads to California’s Buckley Speedway this week for the popular President’s Day Special supermodified sim race.

SUPRS President's Day Special 2017 poster

Great looking promotional materials like this President’s Day poster from BreezeGraphics.com will have you singing Hail to the Chief

For the second year in a row the SUPRS President’s Day Special takes place at a new venue, and for the first time in California. But the format remains the same while the game platform returns to NASCAR Heat after being a rFactor race last year at The Bullring.

Buckley Speedway, a long-time SUPRS venue, hosts this year’s President’s Day Special as part of SUPRS Winter Western Swing that kicked off last week at Phoenix International Raceway for the Copper World Classic XIII presented by Kern Motor Sports.

The SUPRS Gold Crest Wing Championship battle for supremacy got even closer last week at PIR when Joe Achzet cut another bug chunk from Rob Warren’s lead with a win in the non-wing supermodified part of the event. Achzet now trails Warren by just 84 points.

To Warren’s advantage this week is that he’s the defending winner of the race,(albeit using rFactor and at The Bullring), and has a lot more track time on the high-banked oval at Buckley where finesse can pay big dividends as drivers come up out of the bowled corners.

Warren and Achzet will have to contend with the likes of former President’s Day Special winner “Steady” Steve Callahan, as well as NASCAR Heat masters Carl “Bonzai” Becker, Dave “The Enforcer” Brigandi, Bob Gangwer, “The Breeze” Kevin Timmins and “The Dominator” Domenic Gioia.

Added to the mix will be drivers that have very little, if any, experience at Buckley like Chad Phelps, Derrick Backus, Kyle Clark, rookie Nelson Rodrigues, (who won his second SUPRS feature last week at PIR), and believe it or not, the guy that’s third in points, Keith “Put One on Ya” Powell.

Practice for the 2017 President’s Day Special starts at 8pm Tuesday, February 20. Racers will use their NASCAR Heat sim supermodifieds to time trial, run a fast car dash, a heat and a 75 lap feature.

Coming up next week to close out the SUPRS “Winter Western Swing” on February 28, is the prestigious 13th Annual Billy Vukovich III Classic 100 at Mesa Marin Raceway presented by Supermodified Scorecard.
