Crazy Canuck Snowball Derby at Cayuga Speedway Next for SUPRS

Goshen, IN – January 3, 2016….After a two-week break to allow members to spend time with family and friends for the Christmas and New Year holidays, the stars of the Supermodified Ultimate Pavement Racing Series will fire up their online sim supermodifieds for the first time of the new year for the 12th Annual Crazy Canuck Snowball Derby on January 5, 2016 at Cayuga Speedway.

Thanks to BreezeGraphics.com we always have great looking promotional posters!

Myles Maxon of Oswego, NY is the defending winner of the race and was on the winning Snowball Derby Challenge team with Domenic Gioia last year. Maxon is one of three multi-time winners of the race and has been a member of a  Snowball Derby Challenge winning team twice.

While it’s unlikely fans will see the defending series wing sim supermodified champion on the track this year, it’s interesting to note that from 2006-2010 he never finished below seventh, finished on the podium once and in the top five a total of four times during that span. Maxon also won the Summit Classic 125 the one and only time it was ever held at Cayuga Speedway in 2010.

Domenic Gioia joined Maxon in victory lane to receive the Snowball Derby Championship Crown last year. The pair finished the night with 130 points, tying Bob Gangwer and Dave Brigandi for the team championship, but received the winners laurels based on highest finishing team member.

Of the current top five in the SUPRS Gold Crest Wing Championship standings, only one has won this event and that is Sand, Jr.

With three Snowball Derby wins to his name, as well as being the current track record holder, (a mark that has stood since 2009),  Ray “The Sandman” Sand, Jr. is considered the man to beat at Cayuga Speedway.

Last year he led the first 26 laps of the race and looked to be on his way to another win but dropped out of the race just past the half-way point. This year he’s in the midst of a battle for top spot on the SUPRS Gold Crest Wing Championship standings with SUPRS most recent winner Rob Warren.

Rob Warren in Christmas Special victory lane

Rob Warren is hot this season. Is he hot enough to melt Ray Sand, Jr.’s record at Cayuga?

Rob Warren may have the fewest Crazy Canuck Snowball Derby starts of the top three in the current point standings, but he comes into this year’s event holding the most wins of the season at six, and will be looking for his third feature win in a row. Warren has missed one Derby, (in 2011), but has finished no lower than 12th, (2010), and has two sixth place finishes (2012, 2013) in the Cayuga Speedway races he’s run. Last year he finished fourth and has also been on the podium as part of a Snowball Derby Challenge winning team in 2013.

While Sand, Jr. and Warren battle at the top of the point standings, Steve Callahan has had a rough start so far, missing a couple of races including the Christmas Special which was the last race of 2015.

Regardless, Callahan’s name is synonymous with starts at Cayuga. Callahan has finished no lower than sixth place since 2010 and has been a model of consistency at Cayuga while living up to his “Steady Steve” nickname, making every race at Cayuga Speedway since becoming a member and placing no lower than 15th place since his first Crazy Canuck Snowball Derby run in 2006.

The competitors will not only be racing against each other but they will also pair up into two-man teams where the slowest matches up with the fastest from time trials. Each member of the team will work throughout the night to gain the most points possible for the overall Snowball Derby Challenge Championship.

Missing only one race since the first one in 2005 and tied with Steve Callahan for most Crazy Canuck Snowball Derby feature starts is Bob Gangwer. Having never won the race, Gangwer does have the distinction of being on the Snowball Derby Championship Team the most often. Gangwer joined with Jim Davidson,(2006), Dan Brigandi, (2007), Jamie Hartley, (2010), and Ed Riley, (2011), for a total of four Snowball Derby Championships.

Time Trials, Canadian Pursuit, Heats, and a 50 lap feature will keep the racers busy all night long on a slick track that is anything but predictable as they race for extra Gold Crest Division Season Championship points that come from being on the winning Snowball Derby Championship team.

The snowballs start flying at 8:00 pm for practice and will be followed by Time Trials at 8:30 pm and Racing at 9:00 pm.

Christmas Special Winner Receives Burgers’ Ham

Goshen, IN – December 13, 2015…The Supermodified Ultimate Pavement Racing Series, (SUPRS),  will end the year with the 12th Annual Christmas Special 25 at Bracket Hill Raceway in New Hampshire Tuesday December 15, 2015.

In the 12 year history of the race there has never been a repeat winner in the quick 25 lap sprint for non-wing sim supermodifieds and that streak could be broken this year as both Ray Sand, Jr. and Rob Warren have dominated the win column for SUPRS.

Warren is the most recent SUPRS winner, taking the Dion Parish Memorial last week and while Sand, Jr. is the 2008 Christmas Special winner, the current track record holder at Bracket Hill Raceway and in nine Christmas Special races run, has finished out of the top five just once and out of the top three a mere four times.

Rob Warren holds off a hard-charging Ray Sand, Jr. as they cross the stripe for the white flag at the 2014 Christmas Special.

Last year both drivers figured into the outcome of the race. After starting from the pole position and fending off Sand, Jr., Warren parked his First to Finish Docks & Hoists machine in victory lane for the 12th Annual Christmas Special.

Then, in the true spirit of the Christmas season, after accepting the accolades and awards for his win, including a Burgers’ Smokehouse Christmas Ham, he promptly asked that the ham be sent to Jeff Russell, a supermodified racer that continues to recover from Traumatic Brain Injury suffered at Las Vegas Bullring in 2010.

Former winners Steve Callahan and Bob Gangwer are expected to challenge Sand, Jr. and Warren for the win. Dave Brigandi and Domenic Gioia, both sitting in the top of the SUPRS Gold Crest Wing Championship Points Standings, should never be counted out, even though neither has run more than two Christmas Specials.

The Christmas Special will feature a full format including time trials, Fast 4 ReindeerBurgers' Smokehouse logo Dash and Heat Races, then closes with the short 25 lap sprint to the checkered flag in the feature race at Bracket Hill Raceway. Again this year, the winner will receive a Christmas Ham from Burgers’ Smokehouse delivered in time to enjoy for Christmas Dinner.

Practice for the 12th Annual Christmas Special gets rolling at 8:00pm.  with practice which starts at 8:00pm. Time Trials are at 8:30pm and Racing gets underway at 9:00pm. Full details can be found on the SUPRS schedule page.

Wing Side Up Twins Because Two are Better Than One

Share SUPRS:

Goshen, IN – November 29, 2015…The Wing Side Up Twin 25s sim for the Supermodified Ultimate Pavement Racing Series, (SUPRS), has always been a race filled with nail-biting, high-bank riding action and this year is likely to be no different.

What’s better than a set of twins? An event poster by BreezeGraphics.com!

For the 12th year Bob Gangwer’s Wing Side Up on the World Wide Web will sponsor the night of sim supermodified action and as on several occasions in the past, non-wing supermodifieds will be on the card. The only difference is, this year, BOTH of the 25 lap features will be contested without the wings and the drivers will use the SUPRS rFactor NW V1 mod.

“When we first started SUPRS, there was no Winchester, Salem, Toledo, or Dayton Speedway’s so the closest thing to those tracks where I grew up watching supermodifieds at was Bristol,” said Gangwer who is also the SUPRS co-founder.
“So, with this being one of the original NASCAR Heat tracks, we thought it would be a blast to run two quick sprints here and it’s turned out pretty good every year since.”

The two-race event quickly became a favorite of SUPRS racers as they test their nerves and skill while turning sub-11 second laps in a short 25 lap feature that leaves no time for preserving equipment.

Featuring the SUPRS Double Down, SUPRSChallenge, and SUPRSCharger bonuses is just one part of the wild Wing Side Up raciness. For the Double Down, a driver can double his feature finish points if he can win both features. With the SUPRSChallenge, the driver that starts last in each feature can claim 20 bonus points if he can make it to the front to win. The SUPRSCharger award is good for 10 bonus points to the driver that advances the most places from his feature starting spot.

While all of those may seem somewhat easy, the Double Down has only been claimed twice and the SUPRSChallenge has never been claimed at this event. Doug Heveron and John Davidson are the only drivers to have won both features on the same night. Heveron doing it in 2007 and Davidson in 2012.

Adding to the challenge of racing at Bristol, the first race includes time trials and heat to set the feature starting field while the second feature is a complete inversion of the first feature’s finish.

The SUPRS racers are ready to double the action and double the fun on the big banks of Bristol Motor Speedway this Tuesday December 1, 2015. Official practice starts at 8pm with the Driver’s Meeting at 8:15pm. The drivers will take to the track for Time Trials at 8:30 and the racing is set to go begin at 9pm.

Supermodified and online sim racing fans and friends can savor the action and view timing and scoring of every SUPRS rFactor race in an instant, including the 12th Annual Wing Side Up Twin 25s via the SUPRS LIVE! page.

You can learn more about this race on the SUPRS schedule page.  Regular season updates as well as real supermodified and sim racing news are popular features on the Supermodified Ultimate Pavement Racing Series Facebook page and @SUPRSOnline.
