Steve Callahan Crowned SUPRS Gold Crest Non-Wing Mid-Season Champion for Second Year in a Row Oswego, NY – June 28, 2016…After struggling in his heat race and placing fourth in the first feature, Steve Callahan had no idea he would be anywhere close to being a back to back Supermodified Ultimate Pavement Racing Series, (SUPRS), Gold Crest Non-Wing Supermodified Mid-Season Champion. But after a win in the second Twin 35 lap feature and a multitude of… Keep Reading

June 27, 2016 – Goshen, IN…The Supermodified Ultimate Pavement Racing Series, (SUPRS), is already at the halfway point of the Gold Crest Non-Wing Championship Season and the SUPRS racers are now setting their sights on a Mid-Season Championship Crown.

With a full slate of action featuring time trials, heats, Twin 35 lap features and double points as well as bonus points for the driver crowned Mid-Season Champion, and SUPRSCharger for both features, the action is sure to be intense at Oswego Speedway on Tuesday, June 28..

This season SUPRS will  crown their Mid-Season Champion with Twin 35 lap feature races at Oswego Speedway in a format identical to the Gold Crest Wing Season where the top eight finishers of the first feature will be eligible for the handicap of the second, and consistency over the course of all the night’s events will pay huge rewards.

Current SUPRS Gold Crest Non-Wing Championship point leader and defending Gold Crest Non-Wing Champion, Rob Warren has had a fantastic first half of the season. Warren has taken his 1st to Finish Racing roadster to two wins and hasn’t been off the podium except for last week in the race his company sponsored. A rare instance found him crashed against the turn 3 foam after contact with Kevin Timmins. The incident dropped him to eighth place, but he was able to keep up his points lead when nearest challenger Bob Gangwer finished just two spots better.

Steve Callahan picked up the win in the first Twin 35 of the Mid-Season Championship.

Defending SUPRS Gold Crest Non-Wing Mid-Season Champion Steve Callahan has been a “Steady” top five finisher, and is now tied for third place in the points after a great run last week in the 1st to Finish Race Servers “IrRegular 45.” He will now try to improve upon his best season finish thus far which was a third at the Jim Shampine Memorial as he attempts to defend his Mid-Season Championship crown and advance in the standings.

The driver suddenly on the move is Keith Powell of Carrollton, OH. Powell has steadily improved his finishing position to a current season high of second last week, and is now in second place in the points. The quick 35 lap races could hurt him though as his set-up takes a while to come in and he won’t have the luxury to wait on Tuesday night.

The 2014 Non-Wing Mid-Season Champion, Domenic Gioia has worked hard to get comfortable in his new racing rig and his effort was clear last week when placed third. His points handicap should put him near the front in a qualifying heat race and that could be his best asset in his quest to become a two-time Non-Wing Mid-Season Champion.

Domenic Gioia crosses stripe for Mid-Season win at Oswego Speedway

Domenic Gioia held off a hard charging Myles Maxon to take the win in the SUPRS Mid-Season Championship at Oswego Speedway.

All of these drivers will have to be wary of the hard charging, perennial SUPRS Champion, Ray Sand, Jr. “The Sandman” has not had a great season so far showing three DNF in the stats, but with a  win last week and a total of seven Mid-Season Championships, (counting the Gold Crest Wing season as well), he is considered the favorite to grab the double points for winning as well as the bonus points for being crowned Mid-Season Champion.

If Sand, Jr. is able to pull off his third Non-Wing Mid-Season Championship, he would become the first SUPRS racer to do so. Sand, Jr. is tied with John Davidson (2006, 2010 Non-Wing Mid-Season Champion), and Kris Heveron ( 2007-08 Non-Wing Mid-Season Champion), for most wins in this important event. Jim Crannell (2005), Devin Gee (2009), and Domenic Gioia (2014), are the only other racers to have scored Mid-Season Championships for the Non-Wing season. There was no race held in 2013.

“The Rabbit” Joe Achzet is still looking to put a check mark in the win column this season and even though still out of the top five in points, has shown moments of great speed and seems to have a car that is especially good in short runs like this week’s races.

Achzet is one of the drivers hanging out between third to eighth in the standings with the most to gain, or lose, on Tuesday night. Those drivers are separated by just 104 points total and includes the 2016 Port City Kick-Off winner Clinton Cyr.

Potential spoilers could be 2010 SUPRS Silver Crest Non-Wing Champion Derrick Backus and current Icings on Top Rookie of the Year points leader Kyle Clark. The two have consistently improved each week and as part of the three-member, (along with Chad Phelps), Disturbed Motorsports team, they have been able to share set-up information which has helped them each time they have raced.

The SUPRS 12th Non-Wing supermodified sim racing  season continues on June 28 with the running of the Mid-Season Championship at Oswego Speedway. Official Practice starts at 8:00 pm with the green flag dropping for racing action at 9:00 pm.
