Mid-Season Championship at Oswego Speedway Tuesday

January 26, 2015 – Goshen, IN…The Supermodified Ultimate Pavement Racing Series will run its Mid-Season Championship for the Gold Crest Wing Supermodifieds on Tuesday and the season point standings may see a big shake up with double points and bonuses on the line.

Reigning SUPRS Gold Crest Wing Season Champion Ray Sand, Jr. has run a limited schedule this year but picked up a big win recently in the Terry Gibson Memorial 100 at Sandusky Speedway. Sand, Jr. has won more Gold Crest Wing Mid-Season Championships than any other SUPRS driver in history and will be looking for his third one in a row Tuesday night when the SUPRS racers take to Oswego Speedway in a Twin 35 lap feature format.

While Sand, Jr. will certainly be a driver to bet on with a total of six Mid-Season Championships between the Gold Crest Wing and Non-Wing supermodifieds and more wins at Oswego Speedway than any other SUPRS racer in history, there’s no discounting current point leader and Sand, Jr.’s arch rival in SUPRS online supermodified racing, “Mighty” Myles Maxon.

Maxon has a total of seven feature wins this season and is enjoying a comfortable 148 point lead over current second place point man Steve Callahan He will attempt to grab another SUPRS Gold Crest Wing Supermodified Championship, (his first coming in 2007-08, then again in 2009-10). Maxon has done well lately in his home state of New York, kicking off the Empire State Super Series Regional Tour at Linden Speedway last week with a win and even though the wins haven’t come, has been consistently in the top five when he’s raced at Oswego.

The biggest points battle to watch will be the one for second. As mentioned, “Steady” Steve Callahan sits in second right now, but Rob Warren is hot on his heals a scant seven points behind. The first half of the season has been one of the best ever for Callahan winning twice already. He usually really turns up the heat at the midway point of the year so this race could be the catalyst that puts him in contention for his first SUPRS Season Championship ever.

“Rocket” Rob Warren is never one to shy away from a battle and with his history at Oswego Speedway, Callahan and the rest of the competitors have their work cut out for them. Warren is a former SUPRS Gold Crest Wing Mid-Season Champion,(2011-12), and has a big edge over Callahan when it comes to sitting in victory lane at Oswego Speedway after a major event. While Callahan has never won a major at “The Big O”, Warren has plenty in both wing and non-wing online supermodified races as well as modified races.

With double points, bonuses, and Twin 35 lap features anything could happen and not only will the focus be on winning the Mid-Season Championship but the racers will also be looking for a big points score in the ongoing Empire State Super Series Regional Tour of which this event is part of.

2010-11 SUPRS Gold Crest Wing Supermodified Mid-Season Champion, Chris Meyers, is also expected to compete in his Bodnar chassis, Oswego Sub Shop sponsored machine as well.

SUPRS 11th season continues on January 27 with the running of the Mid-Season Championship at Oswego Speedway. Practice starts at 8:00 pm with the green flag dropping for racing action at 9:00 pm.

Tight Season Points Battle Could See Shakeup

July 7, 2014 – Goshen, IN…The Supermodified Ultimate Pavement Racing Series will run its Mid-Season Championship for the Gold Crest Non-Wing Supermodifieds on Tuesday and the season point standings may see a big shake up with double points and bonuses on the line.

SUPRS Non Wing Supermodified Mid Season Championship poster

After a year off, SUPRS will once again return to Oswego Speedway to crown a Mid-Season Champion with a 50 lap feature race.

Reigning SUPRS Gold Crest Non-Wing Champion Ray Sand, Jr. has yet to win a race this season. However, with two straight wins in this event, and a total of eight Mid-Season Championships counting the Gold Crest Wing season, he may be considered the favorite to take the 5o lap feature and grab the double points for winning as well as the bonus points for being crowned Mid-Season Champion.

If Sand, Jr. is able to pull off his third Non-Wing Mid-Season Championship, he would become the first SUPRS racer to do so. As of now he is tied with John Davidson (2006, 2010 Non-Wing Mid-Season Champion), and Kris Heveron ( 2007-08 Non-Wing Mid-Season Champion), for most wins in this important event. Jim Crannell (2005), and Devin Gee (2009), are the only other racers to have scored Mid-Season Championships for the Non-Wing season. There was no race held in 2013.

Sand’s main challenge will most likely come in the form of “Mighty” Myles Maxon as he has now won more than any other driver this season, racking up three feature wins to date. Maxon has never won the Mid-Season Championship for the Non-Wing supermodifieds, but other than one bad night, has kept Sand, Jr. and the rest of the competitors in check and now sets a solid 66 points ahead of nearest challenger Rob Warren.

Warren, while looking to gain points on Maxon has to do what he can to keep Sand, Jr. behind him. “Rocket” Rob has one win so far this season and is just one scant point ahead of Sand, Jr. in the points chase.

The SUPRS 10th Anniversary season continues on July 8 with the running of the Mid-Season Championship at Oswego Speedway. Practice starts at 8:30 pm with the green flag dropping for racing action at 9:00 pm.
