SUPRS Celebrating 15 Years of Supermodified Sim Racing for the Right Reasons with Triple Tuesday Event

November 4, 2018 – Goshen, IN…It’s not often that you can find a gaming clan, league, or group that’s been around for 10 years, let alone a sim racing sanction that’s lasted for 15. But this week the Supermodified Ultimate Pavement Racing Series, (SUPRS), celebrates that very fact when they come together for a special night of racing and remembering on Election Day 2018 for SUPRS 15th Anniversary Special. Calling it “Triple Tuesday” the original online supermodified sim racing sanction plans to run three different gaming platforms using three different modifications at three different tracks to showcase their history with an eye on the future.

Thrice as Nice

SUPRS 15th Anniversary Special “Triple Tuesday” event promises to be something few sim racers have participated in. Utilizing the first in-house, scratch-built modification for NASCAR Heat, then moving the current rFactor mod, (also built in-house), and finishing up with a brand-new, never seen rFactor2 supermodified built in-house, is sure to make for a challenging but fun night of racing.

All three races are scheduled for 33 laps with the first two races are points paying shows. The first race is part of SUPRS 14 event NASCAR Heat Supermodified Challenge which is open to the public. and uses the NHSM, (NASCAR Heat SuperModified), mod built by Shaker Designs’ Kevin Marine on former SUPRS designer, Doug “Flash” Forgue’s Paved_Featherlite Speedway.

SUPRS 2018 rFactor Belfab Racing supermodified

SUPRS newest addition to rFactor, the Belfab, was built to meticulous detail by BreezeGraphics.com owner Kevin Timmins from original blueprints provided by the late Jim Belfiore.

Moving to a new release of their rFactor wing supermodified for race two, the SUPRS racers will take on Richmond International Raceway to showcase a brand-new Belfab supermodified chassis and an articulating wing that’s never been done before.

Finally, the last 33 lap show will showcase SUPRS yet to be released rFactor2 supermodified which breaks new ground for supermodified sim racing. The exhibition takes place at SUPRS Oswego Speedway, updated to take advantage of the more modern rFactor2 gaming engine.

Humble Beginnings Quickly Turn into Growth

Like most long-running organizations, SUPRS started out very small. What initially began as a few guys getting together to race NASCAR Heat on one track, with one type of car, using 56k dial-up internet, and taking turns hosting on race night on the same rig they raced on in 2004, quickly turned into a lot more.

When Bob Gangwer and John Davidson took over the reigns of a foundering sim racing league in November of 2004, they immediately released an ambitious 38 race schedule even though there were only four members.

By the time the end of the first season rolled around, SUPRS had their first in-house mod builder, had their first dedicated race server, and released an updated version of the Mike Jackson PSTM psuedo supermodified they were racing.

When the last race of that first season ended, dealing with warp, corrupted files, and lag was still something they had to deal with, but the community had grown to 36 different drivers, including the first real supermodified racer to join SUPRS ranks, Joey Payne, Jr., and the first ground-up, in-house built mod, (NHSM) by Shaker Designs, featuring two different types of supermodifieds had been released.

Dion Parish Memorial Benevolent Fund for Supermodifieds donation graphicA Different Way of Thinking

In April of 2005, SUPRS founder John Davidson and Bob Gangwer determined that there was more to be done and after an intense meeting with all the SUPRS members that saw several threaten to leave, implemented a “donate to race” policy by offering two types of membership.

While gaming leagues asking for donations was nothing new, the difference was, donations made to SUPRS weren’t for awards, server costs, or personal gain. From that day forward all membership donations were used to help injured supermodified racers through the Dion Parish Memorial Benevolent Fund for Supermodifieds with a separate account set up for prizes and costs.

As Unique as the Cars They Race

SUPRS has remained consistent in its goals and Mission, choosing to focus more on a family atmosphere and giving and not concentrating on wins, chaos, and flaming fellow league members. Sometimes, that philosophy has come at the cost of losing members, or being ridiculed publicly, but at the end of the day, the sanction has stayed true to its original goals and has survived through thick and thin without compromising its integrity.

While many other leagues or sanctions may race supermodifieds, they also run many other forms of race cars. You won’t find any go-karts, dwarf cars, late models, dirt modifieds, or off-road trucks at SUPRS. While on occasion SUPRS has run NASCAR Tour type modifieds, and a few sprint car races, the main focus has been, is, and always will be wing and non-wing supermodified racing. That part of the vision was decided upon from the beginning, knowing that staying super focused on supermodifieds is the only way to truly help people from other forms of online racing understand what makes the real supermodified so special.
