St. Patrick’s Day Race Returns to Dover Downs

For the first time since 2010 the Supermodified Ultimate Pavement Racing Series will stage it’s popular St. Patrick’s Day Grab O’ the Green race and for the first time since 2007 it will be held at the one mile oval of Dover Downs International Speedway.

In the first three years of the race Dover Downs played host to the roaring winged supermodifieds with wins going to Kevin Marine, Randy Ritskes and Kris Heveron.

For the 2007-08 and 2008-09 seasons, after a three year run on the mile, SUPRS officials decided to move away from the longer tracks other than Phoenix and New Hampshire International Speedway The St. Patrick’s day event was then moved to Stafford Mountain Speedway and became part of the Empire State Super Series races.  Bud Flath and Ray Sand, Jr. picked up the wins at the high banked half mile New York venue.

Continuing with a focus on short tracks, the race moved west of the Mississippi to Buckley Speedway in California and was run just prior to the Billy Vukovich III Classic. Canadian Jamie Hartley was victorious in the one and only time the St. Patrick’s Day Grab O’ the Green was raced there.

For the last several years, SUPRS has focused on a smaller schedule and the St. Patrick’s Day Grab O’ the Green was dropped due simply to fact that there were fewer races during the season.

For SUPRS 10th Anniversary Season in 2013-14, an expanded schedule similar to those run in the first five years of the leagues existance has featured a return to many of the old stomping grounds the SUPRS racers have enjoyed in the past. That includes the St. Patrick’s Day Grab O’ the Green going back to where the race started-Dover Downs.

This year’s race will feature a 25 lap supermodified show as well as the Luck of the Leprechaun Modified 125 race. The speeds will be up and the nerves ragged as many of the SUPRS competitors have never seen competition in their supermodified at a track this intimidating. It’s probable that Bud Flath’s track record of 19.793 set on March 16, 2005 may well be shattered as pre-race testing has already seen some cars nipping at the 19.5 second range.

Practice begins at 8pm and Time Trials will take place at 8:30pm. Racing for the supermodifieds will begin with heat races at 8:45pm and the feature is set to go off around 9:00pm. The full Luck of the Leprechaun Modified 125 show is set to go immediately following the completion of the supermodified feature.

SUPRS Copper World Classic IX Postponed

Share SUPRS:

Phoenix, AZ – March 4, 2014…. Due to unforeseen circumstances the Supermodified Ultimate Pavement Racing Series has had to postpone the ninth running of the SUPRS Copper World Classic.

Server and or possibly modem and ISP gremlins reared their ugly head once again and league officials determined that it was in the best interest of the league and the members to put this much anticipated event off until the technical issues could be solved.

The race has been moved to March 25, 2014 and will still feature three divisions of racing including winged, non-winged and pavement modifieds. This race will now take place a week after the St. Patrick’s Day Grab O’ the Green at Dover Downs International Speedway giving the racers two straight weeks of being able to compete on one mile speedways.

Members are encouraged to pay close attention to the schedule page for full details including times and formats.

The next race for the SUPRS competitors will be night one of the 9th Annual Keystone Nationals. This three race series starts at Harrisburg Speedway, on Monday March 10, moves to RT 93 Raceway on Tuesday March 11, and culminates with the prestigious 10th Annual Randy Witkum Memorial 125 at Jennerstown Speedway Wednesday March 12.

The Supermodified Ultimate Pavement Racing Series stars will strike up the band February 18 to play “Hail to the Chief” as the Presidents Day Special returns to New River Valley Speedway for the first time in three years.

The Presidents’ Day Special hasn’t been run every season during SUPRS 10 year history, has varied in length from 38 to 75 laps, and has been contested at New Hampshire International Speedway as well as New River Valley Speedway.

However, the Presidents’ Day Special this year returns to the site of the first rendition of this popular race that happened in 2005 when John “Bud” Flath of New Jersey won.

From 2006 to 2008, New Hampshire International Speedway played host to the Presidents’ Day Special, then was not run from 2009 to 2013. Even so, SUPRS staged races at New River Valley including the popular Veterans’ Day Specials.

Of all the races run at New River Valley Speedway, (Including Presidents’ Day and Veterans’ Day), Steve Callahan has the best winning record of two with his first coming in the 2009 and latest in 2012.

Callahan continues his bid for a win in the 2013-14 10th Anniversary Season and is coming off a string of finishes that has seen him come home second in the last four out of five SUPRS races and looked extremely fast in an open practice session held Sunday February 16.

For the first time ever the Paved Modifieds will race at New River Valley for a 125 lap race. In the past, the modifieds have joined the supermodifieds at the Presidents’ Day Special with Myles Maxon being the driver with the most modified wins. It is unsure if the 2007-08 Gold Crest Champion will be able to compete at this year’s double header, but if he does, the odds could be stacked in his favor. Last weeks Billy Vukovich III Classic winner Rob Warren is also a top runner in the modifieds and turned in some fast laps in both cars on Sunday.

Practice for both classes start at 8pm Tuesday, February 18. The supermodifieds will Time Trial, run a fast car dash, a heat and a 75 lap feature while the modifieds will Time Trial and then start their 125 lap feature straight up.

See the Format for 2014 Presidents’ Day Special on Schedule Page.
