Golden State Classic Returns to Buckley Speedway April 21

Sherman Oaks, CA – April 20, 2020…The Supermodified Ultimate Pavement Racing Series, (SUPRS), Golden State Classic returns to Buckley Speedway on Tuesday April 21. It marks the first time since 2016 that this race has been held at the fictional supermodified sim racing track for NASCAR Heat.

SUPRS Race a Nod to Real Deal

While only a one night show, this NASCAR Heat supermodified sim race staged by SUPRS is a race that pays homage to the Gold State Classics and Golden West Classics of the early to mid 1970s. The Golden State Classic was  an extremely popular series of open competition supermodified races and it is in keeping with SUPRS Mission Statement, that the virtual version of the GSC is run. These the real GSC featured the best drivers from across the United States and Canada on tracks in California and later Nevada.

From 1971-1975 the Golden State and Golden West Classics drew the greatest names in supermodified racing to San Jose Speedway, All-American Speedway, Altamont Speedway, Stockton Speedway, Clovis Speedway, Shasta Speedway, T-Car Speedway, Ukiah, Madera, and on and on for the seven race series. Most times the entry list was over 100 drivers for each of the races and it was often hard to find a place to pit them all.

The combination of dirt, paved, flat 1/4 miles to high banked half miles combined with radically offset roadsters, the San Jose coupes or “hard tops”, upright sprint cars and low slung rear engine supermods, plus huge purses, and a challenging format that had a 100 lap main, a 50 lap b-main and a 25 lap c-main and paid passing points to legendary names like Rescino, Silva, Conley, Silsby, Seelman, Kaeding, Sneva, Edlund, Allbritain, Brazil, Patterson, Ceti, Ellefson, Woodward, Gibson, Bigioni, Madsen, Baker and more, all added up to some of the greatest supermodified racing ever seen on the planet.

Racing at Buckley Intense

Buckley’s high banks, high-speed, and three-eights mile configuration allows for fast lap times and little room for error. Whether it’s been the three previous runnings of the Golden State or the Presidents’ Day Special or just a regular show, the car count always seems larger and that sometimes means a lot of wrecked race cars and egos. Either way, the races at Buckley never fail to disappoint fans of the “Original Supermodified Sim Racing Sanction.”

The banks of Buckley never fail to produce close racing.

Rob Warren has won a total of three races at Buckley, all of them 75 lappers, including the last Golden State race held in 2016, and will be looking for his third straight and fourth overall on Tuesday. Other Buckley winners expected to compete in the Golden State Classic are Keith Powell, Carl Becker and possibly Steve Callahan.

The track record here at Buckley dates back to 2008 when 4-Time SUPRS Gold-Crest Champion Myles Maxon stopped the clocks at 11.895 seconds.

Gary Waldron won the first SUPRS race held at this Mike Jackson, DSES, creation for NASCAR Heat way back in 2006.

Everyone Chasing SpeedyMan

While the list of former Buckley winners is impressive, the driver everyone is chasing of late is Union, CT racer Dave “SpeedyMan” Ohh. The driver of the TMS Wolfpack “Black Beauty” Roadster has put together a string of eight straight SUPRS feature wins that date back to March 10 at Indianapolis Raceway Park. When he won his fifth feature in a row, SUPRS put out a “Bounty” and as of yet, none of the bounty hunters have been quick enough to stop his stomp across the west.

Last Race Before Summit Classic

This race will be the last one before the traveling troupe of supermodified sim racers move from the San Fernando Valley into the Central Valley of California to close out the season at Madera Speedway with the running of the 16th Annual Summit Classic 125 next week. The race at Madera closes out a three week stretch of races in California and puts the period on the 43 race Gold Crest Wing Supermodified Championship XVI.

Important Race Night Times

Practice starts at 8:00pm ET for the Golden State Classic and Time Trials follow 8:30pm. The Fast Car Dash takes to the track at 8:45pm then Heat Races get underway at 9:05pm.

Watch the Golden State Classic

Fans can enjoy all of the supermodified sim racing action from the Golden State Classic via SUPRS LIVE! beginning at 9pm EST. Streaming live on SUPRS.net as well as Twitch, this interactive broadcast has become a favorite for supermodified fans and gamers alike.

Supermodified Challenge Winds Down

The season long SUPRS/HeatFinder.net NASCAR Heat Supermodified Challenge is winding down, and just like last week at Mesa Marin for the Billy Vukovich III Classic presented by Supermodified Scorecard, organizers are expecting a good influx of competitors from Heat Finder and The Mod Squad including Henry “The Bandit” Kelleher who had a good run in the “Vuky” to finish in fourth place.
