The Sandman Puts the Field to Sleep with Indyana Supermodified Challenge Win

Indianapolis, IN-June 25, 2013…Ray Sand, Jr. wasted no time taking the lead from his fifth starting spot and led all 50 laps of the SUPRS Indyana Supermodified Challenge at Indianapolis Raceway Park Tuesday night. Sand, Jr. was joined on the podium by Rob Warren in the First to Finish Docks and Hoists 35 and Myles Maxon in the Tamrack Golf Club 79.

After an initial botched start, Domenic Gioia and Rob Warren led the field to the green and Sand, Jr. quickly marched out to a half track lead and never struggled as the rest of pack fought tooth and nail amongst themselves for the scraps he had left behind.

An incredible battle ensued between Warren and “Crazy” Chris Meyers with Jeff Weber driving the Adkins Glass ‘Deuce” and “Steady” Steve Callahan wheeling the CPR Motorsports 55 getting the front row seat. Meyers night wouldn’t last long though as he pulled the Burch’s Full Throttle Soda Blasting machine pit-side with handling problems leaving Warren to fend off a hard charging Weber and Callahan.

Maxon, after initially struggling at the start, found his rhythm and joined the fray. In one swoop Maxon was able to slide under the 2 of Weber and the 55 of Callahan to move to within striking distance of Warren.

Meanwhile, pole sitter Dom Gioia, who had a horrendous start, slowly and methodically worked his way back to the pack, but with the laps ticking down was unable to capitalize on Weber or Callahan’s mistakes.

With just 5 laps to go Maxon tried Warren low in turn one but was unable to pull off a second place finish two weeks in a row. Callahan, with his hands full holding off Weber, came home fourth and Weber in his first ever appearance at IRP hung on for a top five.

The SUPRS competitors return to Oswego Speedway next week for their annual celebration of the birth of the United States of America with the Independence Day Twin 35s. Practice starts at 8:30pm with the racing beginning at 9pm.
