October 23, 2020 – Goshen, IN…After a string of five races in three nights at the recent North Carolina Swing, the Supermodified Ultimate Pavement Racing Series, (SUPRS), daredevils are psyching themselves up to tackle the thrills, chills, and spills that await them at the Black Kat Klassic rFactor supermodified sim race on October 27 at Myrtle Beach Speedway.
Two Have Tamed the Kat Since 2015
Generally, black cats, or in this case Kat, are not considered lucky. There may be some truth to that since there have been only seven drivers in the history of the race to have won it. Of those lucky seven, two drivers stand out, and one of those has the all-time win record for the Black Kat Klassic at three-Rob Warren.
Warren and Keith Powell have locked out all other SUPRS competitors from a win in the Black Kat Classic since 2015 and a move to treacherously dangerous high-speed, high-banked, bumpy rFactor tracks. With a check in the win column alternating every other year, the trend would have Keith Powell back in victory lane in 2020, and as a two-time Black Kat Klassic winner that excels, like Warren on these tricky tracks, he’d like nothing more than to tie Warren’s record of three wins in this race.
“It always means a lot to me to tie Rob’s records,” said Powell. “With his race wins total, and his championships, I am honored to be mentioned in the stats with him.” The driver of the Icings on Top “Mayfield Missile” couldn’t put a specific reason on why he and Warren have dominated the win column since 2015 but said, “I think since running rFactor it seems that Rob and I have battled each other at a lot of tracks, and season championships, and the Black Kat is no different. It is odd or even “Spooky” to have 2 drivers with total different driving styles to go back and forth like we have for the Black Kat.”
Powell knows that he’ll have his work cut out for him at Myrtle Beach, not only because of Warren and the fact that he is one of only seven drivers to have won the race, but also because of the level of competition SUPRS has of late. “I’m not sure why there has only been seven different winners, but I think that will change, ” Powell noted. “There’s a lot of good drivers running in this league now and both Rob and I have to watch out for them.”
Carl Becker with Black Kat Klassic wins in 2010 and 2013 is the only other active SUPRS driver that could tie Warren and at 77 years old, would be the oldest three-time victor.
Keysor Hopes to Keep Others at Bay
Brad Keysor will take the championship point lead to Myrtle Beach and with it the hopes of winning his third feature of the season after claiming The Hickory Hustle and North Carolina Swing Championship last week. But he also knows that, if history is any indication, he’s got the odds stacked against him in the form of a two-time winner and the driver that’s chasing him in the points, Keith Powell. Plus, he’ll have a host of SUPRS hotshoes trying to chase him up a tree including Warren, SUPRS Non-Wing Supermodified Champion Dave Ohh, and a litter of fast rookies, and new drivers that have never competed on the perilous banks of Myrtle Beach Speedway.
Keysor isn’t superstitious enough to think that bad luck will befall him at the Black Kat Klassic, but still, he’s approaching the race with a little bit of fear.
“There’s so many fast guys in SUPRS right now,” stated Keysor. “I’m not scared or worried, because I feel like I have a pretty good car, but I’m not the only one that will have a good car and it’s going to come down to having some good luck and avoiding getting the car tore up at this fast track.”
