January 7, 2024 -Goshen, IN…The drivers and fans of the Supermodified Ultimate Pavement Racing Series, (SUPRS), are geared up for two nights and 150 laps of supermodified sim racing that honors the Gibson family on January 9 and 10, 2024 at “The North Coast Home of the Supermodifieds” – Sandusky Speedway.
Gibson Fast 50 Gets the Ball Rolling
The big two night event gets rolling with the Gibson Fast 50, a race to honor members of a family of racers that have given much to the real supermodified division. Todd, Brenda, Jeff, and Terry have all passed on, but Gene Lee, Larry, Deb and third generation racer Zack continue to be respected members of the supermodified community.
This race is a quick warm-up to the following night’s Terry Gibson Memorial 100, the winner of which becomes a guaranteed starter for the season ending 2023 Summit Classic 125.
Terry Gibson Memorial on Wednesday
SUPRS honors the memory of supermodified racer Terry Gibson with the 16th Annual Terry Gibson Memorial 100 at Sandusky Speedway. Terry lost his life during a heat race while competing with the Midwest Supermodified Association at Toledo Speedway on July 18, 2008.
Terry did more with less, and always did things his way, all while being part of the iconic first family of supermodified racing, the Gibsons of Richwood, OH.
Everything gets underway with practice at 8:00 pm, followed by the driver’s meeting at 8:10 pm. After that drivers take to the track for time trials at 8:20 pm with racing slated to begin with heats at 8:30 pm. The green flag drops on the main event at 9:00 pm after driver introductions and pre-race festivities.
2-Night Sweep Has Happened Eight Times
Of late, nobody has been able to stop Dave Ohh at Sandusky, winning both the 100, and 50 lappers four of the last five years. In total that accomplishment of sweeping both nights has happened eight different times with four different drivers including Ohh.Ray Sand, Jr. was the first to do it in 2013, then again in 2015. Then Rob Warren jumped on the sweeper in 2017. Steve Callahan is the only driver that has been able to break up the Dave Ohh party as the Ohio driver cleaned up both nights in 2020.
If Ohh’s incredible Sandusky streak continues in 2024, he will break Ray Sand, Jr.’s 50 lap and 100 lap win totals of four for each race, and will tie Sand, Jr. with the most 100 lap wins in a row at four.
Wednesday Race Part of Ohio State 500 Series
The 100 lap NASCAR Heat race on Wednesday at Sandusky is also part of SUPRS season long “Ohio State 500 Series” consisting of five 100 lap races across the Buckeye state. Zach Sears won the first of the series at New Bremen Speedway in October and holds a slim five point lead over defending Ohio State 500 Series Champion, Dave Ohh.
