Dave Ohh Laps Terry Gibson Memorial Field for Upset Win
January 9, 2019…Everyone figured he’d be a threat, but no one could predict the upset victory by Dave Ohh over the Supermodified Ultimate Pavement Racing Series, (SUPRS), regulars at 11th Annual Terry Gibson Memorial Wednesday at Sandusky Speedway. After a controversial finish Rob Warren was awarded second place over Keith Powell.
Doubt Is Over
Capitalizing on mistakes, charging hard, but showing patience, “SpeedyMan” as he’s known in sim racing circles, left no doubt that there is no type of sim racing discipline that he can’t win in, including the mighty supermodifieds. He led 63 of the 100 laps, lapped the remainder of the field, and set the fastest lap of the race as well.
“It’s great to be on pace with you guys,” stated Ohh. “It means a lot to come over here and race good with SUPRS.”
Even more impressive is the fact that he swept the two-night event and won the Fast 50 on Tuesday in just his third supermodified start. Clinton Cyr is the only SUPRS driver to win his first sooner, tasting victory in his second race.
Never one to get to riled up, the TMS Wolfpack driver put things into perspective saying, “Winning is nice but having good racing and having fun is more important.”

Patience Pays Off
Ohh rode around behind pole-sitter and 2016 Terry Gibson Memorial 100 Champion Bob Gangwer for the first 35 laps, keeping the leader easily in his grasp while holding a comfortable gap in front of third place running Rob Warren. Waiting for the right moment, Ohh got around Gangwer for the lead on lap 37, when the former winner was too tentative while trying to lap another car
For a moment, Gangwer fought back and actually retook the lead when Ohh also got stuck behind the same car. However, he found a gap under Gangwer as they entered turn one. They fought tooth and nail for the next lap or so which allowed Rob Warren to close up and become part of the battle.
Crash Ends Run
Ohh cleared the lapped car and as Gangwer and Warren barrelled down the backstetch closely behind the leader, they split the lapped car and fought for traction in turn three. Warren found it on the low side, but Gangwer was headed for doom and the front stretch wall coming out of turn four.
A spectacular crash ensued and Gangwer’s run was done while SpeedyMan now had a comfortable lead which he then lengthened on each successive lap, never again to be challenged
Winner Ranks SUPRS
With so many big wins under his belt, the question was asked where his Terry Gibson Memorial ranks in terms of how tough it was to win it. Ohh explained that at SUPRS “It’s pretty difficult racing here. “It’s a much different style here compared to ARL, (where he is a 15-time champion), and you have to be really consistent here because one little bobble and someone’s going to get you.”
Becker Bags the B
Carl “Bonzai” Becker won the B-Main after hounded Derrick Backus for several laps. Becker looked mighty fine in his Dowker Titanium Roadster racing against drivers half his age.
Bring on the Buckeye
The SUPRS racers will stick around Ohio for another week to run the Buckeye 50 at Mansfield Motorsports Park. SUPRS LIVE! video streaming, track telemetry, statistics and standings will be available for this race beginning at 9:00pm est. on January 15, 2019.
