Rob Warren Gets First Two Wins of Season on Night 2 of SUPRS North Carolina Swing

October 24, 2018 – Concord, NCRob Warren got back to his winning ways Wednesday on Night 2 of the Supermodified Ultimate Pavement Racing Series’, (SUPRS), 15th Annual North Carolina Swing after being locked out of the winners circle for the first five races of the season. It was the fourth time in six years that Warren swept the second night of racing during the swing.

Southern National Win a Piece of Cake

While not locked out of the win column as long as last night’s winner at Dasera, Carl Becker, it’s very unusual for the defending North Carolina Swing Champion and reigning SUPRS Gold Crest Wing Supermodified Champion not to have won in the first five races of the season. But that winless streak came to an end at the first race of the night held at Southern National Raceway Park.

Warren took off from the pole position and was never seriously challenged for the lead, except on the lone restart of the race with seven laps to go. However, after a couple of laps back at speed, Warren then easily held second place finisher Steve Callahan at bay. Keith Powell came home in third place nearly two and a half seconds back. It was Warren’s second win in three years at the Kenly, NC speedplant.

Familiar Territory

To say that Rob Warren has Concord Motorsports Park figured out would be a gross understatement. At one point in his career, the Pulaski, NY racer had racked up four features wins in a row and led 186 of 200 laps that he had competed in. In the second race of the night, Warren was back in the familiar territory of Concord’s Victory Lane.

This year though, winning wasn’t as easy as in years past. After taking the lead from Bob Gangwer through the dogleg on lap 20 when Gangwer got loose, Warren then had to hold Gangwer off for the rest of the race that included several restarts. In a classic duel, the two drivers weaved through lapped traffic nose to tail. Then towards the end of the race, a hard charging Keith Powell decided he wanted in the mix as well.

On the last restart with just a little over 10 laps to go, the top two pulled away from Powell, and while both struggled to find grip on worn out race tires, Powell could only watch the laps fly by and the positions of the podium never changed.

Time to Hustle

The qualifying races are now complete and the following drivers have received an invitation to The Hickory Hustle at Hickory Motor Speedway:

  • Rob Warren
  • Keith Powell
  • Steve Callahan
  • Bob Gangwer
  • Carl Becker
  • Brad Keysor
  • Derrick Backus
  • Rick Walls

Kyle Clark, and Jeff Bivens are the first and second alternates if the qualified drivers can’t make the show. The winner of the Hickory Hustle will be crowned the 2018 North Carolina Swing Champion, but to win, the SUPRS racers will have to overcome a random draw for starting position and 75 intense laps of action in very close quarters. Practice begins at 8:00pm with racing slated to go at 9:05pm.
