Wing Side Up Twin 25s Moves to The Salem Speedway

Share SUPRS:

November 28, 2022-Goshen, IN…It’s a double dip of supermodified sim racing with the 19th Annual Wing Side Up Twin 25s, and after a run of 18 years at Bristol Motor Speedway, and for the first time in the history of this event, the drivers will take on the famed but treacherous high-banks of The Salem Speedway in southern Indiana.

This double-header of supermodified sim racing spectacular pays homage to the past when The Salem Speedway was a regular stop for non-sanctioned supermodified racing in Indiana. The supermodifieds were a site to see, often running without wings and competing in short 30 lap feature races.

The running of the 19th Annual Wing Side Up Twin 25s also marks the first time that SUPRS has competed at The Salem Speedway since 2019, and the first time that the winged supermodifieds have run under the SUPRS banner there since 2015. The last time SUPRS raced here, Rob Warren came home the winner for the second year in a row.

Big Points Night

From the time the drivers hit the track for Time Trials in their winged supermodifieds, to crossing the stripe for the non-wing supermodified feature, there’s twice the amount of risks and double the rewards if they can survive the torrid pace, and potential for crashing on the high-speed half-mile.

Not only are regular points awarded for time trials and feature finishes, along with standard bonus points for Fast Time, Lap Led, and potentially a New Track Record, but this format also includes special bonuses for both features. The SUPRS Charger, (10 points to the driver that advances the most places from starting place), SUPRS Challenge, (20 points to a driver that starts last and wins), and Double Down, (25 bonus points if a driver wins both features), are all up for grabs.

Salem Races Part of Indyana Supermod Challenge

Also critical to the overall championship points battle is the fact that these two races are also part of the 2022-23 Indyana Supermod Challenge, (ISC), series where the overall winner of the series takes home 10 valuable bonus points.

The ISC began in October at LaPorte Speedway, and finishes in April at Indianapolis Raceway Park with a double-header, wing and non-wing supermodified spectacular. Dave Ohh is the defending champion of the Indyana Supermod Challenge and is currently leading the SUPRS Gold Crest Wing Supermodified Championship points. Ohh has a 74 point lead over Brad Keysor who finished second to Ohh in the ISC standings last year. Neither driver has ever competed at The Salem Speedway in SUPRS competition and both sit behind veterans Bob Gangwer and Gary Waldron in this year’s current Indyana Supermod Challenge standings.

It should be interesting to see if the veterans with experience like Gangwer, Waldron and Carl Becker and Keith Powell, can overcome the youth and exuberance of racers like Ohh and Keysor at this treacherous track, and stay on top of the ICS standings leaving Salem.

The SUPRS Racers will be hoping for everything to go right at The Wing Side Up Twin 25s because when things go wrong at The Salem Speedway, they go really wrong as Bruce Robey found out during a feature race for the open competition supermodifieds in April of 1988. Robey was only shaken up in the crash that started entering turn one and didn’t end until the middle of turn 1 and 2. (Photo used with permission of B&G Racing Photos)

After 10 days away for Thanksgiving Break, the SUPRS racers are hoping everything goes right when they take on the high speeds and big banking of The Salem Speedway on Tuesday, November 29, 2022 for the Wing Side Up Twin 25s. Official practice starts at 7:30pm with the non-winged supermodifieds. The winged supers take to the track for a 15 minute hot lap session at 7:45pm. The Drivers’ Meeting takes place at 8:00pm. The drivers then strap into their winged supermodifieds for Time Trials at 8:10pm. Heat Races for the winged supermodifieds are schedule to start at 8:35 with the first 25 lap feature tentatively set to take the green around 8:50pm.

After a quick break to reset the servers and the drivers will try to catch their breath before a quick warm-up in their non-wing supermodifieds before lining up for the second 25 lap feature at around 9:20pm.
