Brad Keysor Holds on for Topless! 200 Win After Leader Drops Out
August 12, 2020 – Oswego, NY…Winning the Supermodified Ultimate Pavement Racing Series, (SUPRS), season ending Topless! 200 has always been as much about being lucky as it is being good, and while Dave Ohh looked to be the best after leading 122 laps, Brad Keysor was certainly more lucky when Ohh dropped out of the race due to a bad internet connection. Keysor was never seriously challenged in the final 78 laps. Zach Sears had a great run to finish second in just his second Topless! 200 start, and veteran Keith Powell finished in third place for the second year in a row.
Not the Way He Wanted to Win
The likable winner was somewhat subdued in his Topless! 200 victory celebration because he had hoped to beat the top running Dave Ohh on the track, not because of the leader disconnected. “
“First of all I want to thank SUPRS, 1st to Finish Race Servers, Icings on Top, Hairbag Studios, BreezeGraphics.com and a special shout out to Chasing Cameras,” he began. “I hate that both, (Keysor also won The Whistler-Pete Trenca Memorial), wins now this season have been when Dave, (Ohh), lost connection. I’d rather beat Dave on the track. It’s a nice win, but it’s a somber win.”
Once he had a moment to think about his race, he talked about what he thought his chances of winning were if Ohh had been able to keep a connection.
“It was a good race over here,” said Keysor. I worked a lot with Dave, the HeatFinder.net and Mod Squad guys, and I think we found something, but I’m not sure I had anything for him because we were basically running the same setup.”
Pre-Race Strategy Almost Worked
When asked about his race strategy and when he thought he knew he had a car that could put him in contention for the win he said, “I think around lap 30, that’s when we knew that the car would start to come in and we could run some 16.2s and maybe lower, but we knew we didn’t want to burn the tires off.” “The real strategy was to try to get Keith and Rob down a lap to prevent what happened at the end of the race where Keith was right there. We wanted to run hard and try to make them chase us a little earlier so they’d use there stuff up.”
Powell was in third place at the end of the race after a pit stop around the half-way mark. At one point Powell was perilously close to going down a lap after the pit stop, but fought off Ohh, then Keysor to stay on the same lap as the leader. Had it not been for some contact with a lapped car, Keysor’s fears may have come true. “I have to give Keith credit, he did what he had to do he ran the race he needed to run. Dave tried to lap him, then I did too. It’s a real credit to his talent in these long races.”
Rookie of the Race Goes to Rookie of the Year
Erich Becker capped off a great summer season where he not only received the Icings on Top Rookie of the Year Award honors, but also the 16th Annual Topless! 200 Rookie of the Race Award for his fifth place finish. “That was a lot of fun tonight,” said the Shelby Township, MI racer. “I really want tH do it again. Hats off the Brad on the win and Dave Ohh for a great season, and all the guys that ran ahead of me up there. It was a lot of fun and I’m looking forward to the next one.”
Rookie Receives SUPRSCharger Award
Rookie, Steven Vincent of Cicero, NY advanced the most places and received the SUPRSCharger Award and was happy to make it to the end of the 200 lap grind. “That was awefully fun. It was just my second race here at SUPRS, so just to finish it was an accomplishment. Thanks to everyone that hepled me, Brad and Ryan, (Cloonan). I can’t wait to do it again next year,” he said.
Break in the Action
SUPRS will take a break from the online sim supermodified racing as many members gear up to spend time with friends and family at the Oswego Speedway 64th Annual International Classic 200 over Labor Day weekend.
When the break ends, the drivers take to one of the original SUPRS tracks for the 17th Annual Harvest of Speed on October 6, 2020 at LaPorte Speedway. The 75 lap feature will be part of the SUPRS/HeatFinder NASCAR Heat Supermodified Challenge.
