New Track Record Puts Ohh on Topless! 200 Pole

August 11, 2020 – Oswego, NY…Track records were made to be broken, and two were broken in the span of about two minutes during qualifying for the Supermodified Ultimate Pavement Racing Series, (SUPRS),  16th Annual Topless! 200 at Oswego Speedway on Tuesday night. Dave Ohh broke Brad Keysor’s qualifying lap record that had just been set, and locked down the pole position. Keysor, who broke Ohh’s two month old record in his qualifying run, will join Ohh on the front row for the second year in a row.

SpeedyMan Held Back

As hard as it may be to believe, the driver of the TMS Wolfpack #11 still had more left in the car and admitted he was holding back and didn’t want to show a full-hand. Ever the thinker, he said, “I’m leaving a little out there for next year so I can lower it again because Brad is getting faster.”  Ohh only took one lap figuring that was one way to keep his full potential hidden. He also noted that, “the track was slicker than I anticipated. It heated up about five or six degrees by the time Brad and I got out there.”

His lap of 15.824 makes him just the third driver in SUPRS history to sit on the Topless! 200 pole more than once. He joins Myles Maxon, (2006, 2014), and Ray Sand, Jr., (2010, 2012, 2013), in an elite group of SUPRS racers that hold that rare distinction.

Keysor Sees Record and Pole Slip Away

As the second to last car to qualify, Keysor knew he had to lay down a great lap. His first lap was just 4 one hundreths of a second away from Ohh’s mark of 15.917 which was set on June 16 of this year, and was good enough for the provisional pole. Keysor’s second lap did the trick and he was momentarily  the holder of a new track record when he clicked off a 15.882 second lap in his non-wing supermodified sponsored by Chasing Cameras and Southern Hills Storm Football.

“It was a relief to get ahead of Rob,” said Keysor. “I had a little slip, but getting the track record was good. There’s a reason why Dave’s been tough all season. I knew he’d be tough, we ran the same set-up so I knew he’d be fast. Congrats to him and congrats to Zach on the win in the Rising Star.”

Sears Secures Guaranteed Starter with Rising Star Win

Zach Sears is SUPRS 2020 Rising Star (Victory Lane Art by BreezeGraphics.com)

For the first time since 2012, The Rising Star race took place and it was a delightful event for participants and spectators alike. Six cars started the race and there was plenty of spirited battles throughout the 50 lap invitation only competition for drivers that had never won a SUPRS non-wing supermodified feature event.

Zach Sears, the 2019-20 Icings on Top Rookie of the Year, brought home his first SUPRS feature win, and with a guaranteed starting spot for the 16th Annual Topless! 200 on Wednesday. That meant he didn’t have to run the qualifying heats and will line up on the inside of the second row for his second career Topless! 200 start.

“It feels good,” said Sears, then added, “It’s not normal to be in victory lane, but thanks to Dave and Brad they have really helped me a lot the last few weeks.”

Even though he took the lead early in the race with a bold pass to the inside of Erich Becker in turn three, he didn’t have clear sailing. As he came up to lap Bobby Hayduk and Danny Ray, he found them embroiled in an all-out slugfest for third place. Neither of them were willing to give up the fight, even though the leader, and second place running Becker, were right on their tails. Sears though, maybe because he’d been in their position before, showed great patience and waited for the right time to go by.

“I’ve been there, he said of the lapped cars. “It’s difficult because you’re racing your race, but they did a good job and I just let them run their race.”

Warren, Cloonan Win Heats

Rob Warren and Ryan Cloonan won the two Topless! 200 qualifying heat races. Cloonan though will have to start behind all other qualified drivers of the Topless! 200 because he is still under the SUPRS probationary period where a driver must have started at least three races to receive his starting handicap. He will be joined at the tail by Steven Vincent for the same reason.

Stage Set for Topless! 200 on Wednesday

The stage is now set for “The Original 200 Lap Supermodified Sim Race” the SUPRS Topless! 200 at Oswego Speedway. The grand finale’ to the 2020 SUPRS Gold Crest Non-Wing Championship XVI, this race is 200 laps of strategy and speed modeled after the famed Oswego Speedway International Classic 200-the greatest of all real supermodified races.

The 2020 edition of this sim racing classic looks to be one of the best yet, with a stout field of cars, and a bevy of talented drivers qualified to compete. And, with six of the 14 qualified drivers having never run this challenging event, the nervous anticipation of what could happen at the drop of the green flag is at an all-time high.

A reminder that there’s still time to sponsor a lap for the 16th Annual SUPRS Topless! 200 for just $1 per lap. All proceeds go toward the Dion Parish Memorial Benevolent Fund for Supermodifieds. More details are on the SUPRS website.
