January 9, 2024 – Sandusky, OH..Liverpool, New York’s Brad Keysor trounced all his foes en-route to winning his first Supermodified Ultimate Pavement Racing Series, (SUPRS), Gibson Fast 50 Tuesday night at Sandusky Speedway. Keysor led all 50 laps after starting from the outside of row one in his BMK Logistics “Little Red Roadster” in the prelim to the Terry Gibson Memorial. “The Coach” ran a perfect play lap after lap, and ended up coasting across the finish line over six and a half seconds ahead of second place finisher Anthony Corsoniti. Bob Gangwer came home in third right on Corsoniti’s tail.
The win was Keysor’s first at Sandusky, but fifth of the season, and is the eighth different winner of the Gibson Fast 50 since the first one was run in 2009. With the victory, he has now pulled to within 112 points of the Gold Crest Championship points lead.
Battle Behind Aids Winner
A torrid battle behind the winner certainly aided Keysor in his quest for his first feature win at Sandusky. Pole sitter, Bobby Hayduk was able to hold a snarling pack of racers at bay for over half of the race. By the time Anthony Corsoniti, Ryan Cloonan, Bob Gangwer, and Zach Sears were able to get by the Brooke Park, OH racer, Keysor had stretched his lead to an insurmountable length.
Even after those drivers had disposed of Hayduk, the pack remained jammed up tighter than the causeway to Cedar Point on the Fourth of July. That is, all but Corsoniti, who was able to pull away in clean air to create a straight a way gap, leaving Cloonan, Gangwer, Sears, and Daniel Nans swapping spots and trading nerf bar paint for better than two thirds of the race.
Gangwer finally cleared the other drivers and set sail for Corsoniti, who sits second in the championship point standings just 57 points behind Sears. But after mounting a sizable challenge, the Indiana racer ran out of laps and came up short, settling for third behind the T’s Forecast sponsored driver.
Hayduk, Keyor Win Heats; Becker, Bivens Return
Earlier in the night Bobby Hayduk and Keysor won their respective 10 lap qualifying heat races where the top three got their handicaps back for the feature inversion. SUPRS welcomed back Carl “Bonzai” Becker and Jeff Bivens after both had been missing from the virtual race track for a while. Becker had a fine night running third in his heat race and battled with the top five early in the race. Bivens road the night out towards the back, but “Grumpy” stayed out of trouble and finished just one lap down.
100 Lap Show on Wednesday
Tomorrow, January 10, 2024, the SUPRS competitors are back at Sandusky to try to become the 2024 Terry Gibson Memorial 100 Champion. Seven drivers have won this race, with Dave Ohh having the most of active drivers, with four, including the last three in a row. It’s unknown if he will be able to keep his streak alive as he’s away from home and without his usual race rig. If he does make the show, he will try to tie Ray Sand, Jr., who has the most Terry Gibson Memorial wins with an incredible four in a row from 2012-2015. Rob Warren and Myles Maxon are the only other drivers to have multiple wins.
A brief practice session begins at 8:00 pm, time trials, heats, and a b-main will follow. The green flag is set to drop on the big race around 9:00 pm after opening ceremonies and driver introductions.
This race is part of the SUPRS/HeatFinder.net NASCAR Heat Supermodified Challenge Series and are open to all drivers that have registered at SUPRS.net and downloaded the proper car and track files within 24 hours of race time.
In addition to this being an open show for the public, it’s also part of SUPRS season long “Ohio State 500 Series” consisting of five 100 lap races across the Buckeye state. Zach Sears is the current point leader in that series after winning the first race at New Bremen Speedway back in October.
The winner of the 100 lap feature becomes a guaranteed starter for the season ending 20th Annual Summit Classic 125 at Madera Speedway in April.
