June 15, 2021 – Oswego, NY… Ryan Cloonan of Oswego, NY, inherited the lead after the top two took themselves out of contention with just two laps to go, and went on to win the Supermodified Ultimate Pavement Racing Series, (SUPRS), 16th Annual Jim Shampine Memorial, 80 lap rFactor feature event for non-wing supermodifieds Tuesday night at Oswego Speedway. It was Cloonan’s first SUPRS points paying feature win and second overall of his young SUPRS racing career.

“If feels good to win against these guys,” said Cloonan. “I may have inherited the lead, but to win this race against guys like Rob, Brad, and Dave means a lot and I’ll take it.”

Port City Kick-Off winner, and and 3-Time Shampine Memorial winner, Rob Warren kept his podium record in tact and came home in second place, while Keith Powell, who was content early on to let the hotdogs check out, ran his usual steady and consistent pace to tally a third place finish.

To the Front, The Back, and Everywhere In-Between

Cloonan had a memorable night and several close calls. He charged toward the front of the pack and quickly found himself battling with the top three after starting sixth. By lap 24 he had muscled his way int second place passing Rob Warren, Keith Powell, and Brad Keysor. Suddenly his car started to swap ends between turns three and four along about lap 34 and made contact with Keysor then the inside hub rail. “I don’t know, if that inside wall wasn’t there to help straighten me out, I was have had a much worse outcome than I did,” said Cloonan. After recovering from the the near spin, Cloonan the Simibility sponsored driver, methodically and steadily clawed his way back into contention and was in third place when the top two touched and spun out.

Other Notes

Fourteen drivers made the call to the green at “The Home of the Supermodifieds” for the 80 lap feature. Ryan Cloonan, and rookies Anthony Corsoniti and Greg Breen, made their very first SUPRS Shampine Memorial start. Nelson Rodrigues won the 12 lap B-Main over Carl Becker who was the last man standing after the rest of the field crashed or had received the blag flag.
