The Father of Modern Supermodified Design

Jim Shampine was a seven-time Oswego Speedway Champion that not only won more feature events at Oswego Speedway, (87), than any other driver, but also has three Oswego Speedway International Classic 200 wins to his name. In 1980 Shampine led all 200 laps of the storied race that many consider the “Indy 500” of supermodified racing. It’s a record that still stands.

While not as prolific outside of his home track as some others, “The Pine”, as he was affectionately known, mastered the tight 1/4 mile confines of Star Speedway well enough to claim the victory in the Star Speedway International Classic 200 there twice. And after Oswego banned his radical offset rear-engine supermodified for fear of driving the cost of racing the supers too high, Shampine took to dirt sprint car racing and won there as well.

Shampine was a founding partner of the International Supermodified Association in 1974, and was the 1977 champion of the sanction that continues today.

He is rightfully known as the father of the modern radical off-set supermodified.

Prior to his death in the 1982 Modified 200 at Oswego Speedway, Shampine’s legacy was already well established and continues on to this day as one the one most talked about in all supermodified circles across the country.

About KTimmins77

Supermodified fan for over 30 years. Heard about this MOD and had to give it try! Been doing graphic art and design for along time. Owner of Breezegraphics Supermodified Art. Specializing in Vinyl Stickers and Window Clings. So designing my own paint scheme is right up my alley. :) Looking to enjoy some SUPRS racing and meet some new friends. Picked #77 in honor of "The King of Supermodifieds" Bentley Warren. I'll never forget that ragged old car (former swift 10pins) he used to muscle around The Steel Palace in the 70's.
