New Tracks, Expanded Multi-Race Swings Add Up to 48 Supermodified Sim Races in 14 States

September 25, 2023 – Goshen, IN…The historic 20th consecutive year for the Supermodified Ultimate Pavement Racing Series, (SUPRS), begins with the largest schedule ever released in the history of the sanction. Eight new to the series tracks have been added, several tracks are returning after an absence from the schedule, and there will be more nights with double races along with expanded multi-race regional tour swings. This all makes for a 48 race season for the winged supermodified sim racing sanction that spans 14 states and Canada over a span of seven months.

SUPRS 2023-24 Gold Crest Wing Supermodified Championship Season Schedule is the most ambitious and largest in the 20 year history of the sanction and features 48 races in 14 states and Canada with racing from October 2023 to April of 2024. New Tracks Added for Expanded Golden State Classic Series

Four of the eight new tracks that have been added are real racing venues that are now part of the expanded SUPRS Golden State Classic Series. Altamont Speedway, Stockton 99 Speedway, Shasta Speedway, and Kern County Raceway Park have helped the Golden State Classic Series balloon from one race at Buckley Speedway, (a fictional track that’s based in California), to a full seven race series just like the real Golden State/Golden West Classic series of the 1970s. The SUPRS Golden State Classic races will take place from April 7-9, take a three day break, come back on the 14, and conclude on the 23 of April. Bonus points will be paid for the overall Gold State Classic champion, and plans are to utilize scoring and formats as close to the real series as possible.

Altamont, Stockton, and Shasta join Madera Speedway, (which hosts the season-ending SUPRS Summit Classic 125), as tracks that all held races during the years the Golden State/Golden West Classic. The Billy Vukovich III Classic 100 at Mesa Marin Raceway is now part of the SUPRS Golden State Classic, and like the newly added Kern County Raceway Park, (a near copy of Mesa Marin which no longer exists), never actually held a Golden State Classic race.

The thrilling Golden State Classic and Gold West Classics were held from 1971 to 1975. This well received series of open competition races featured roadsters, rear-engine supermodifieds, uprights and sprint cars with fields pushing 100 cars on most occasions. The absolute best, short track, open wheel drivers from both sides of the Mississippi and Canada competed for a lucrative nightly purse and overall championship as they made their long trek through California, and later, Nevada. In the five year history of the series, 10 different tracks were used with San Jose Speedway hosting the most with 10 races total.

Indyana Supermod Challenge Adds Two New Tracks

Last year Dave Ohh and Ryan Cloonan each won a feature at The Salem Speedway. This year Winchester Speedway joins the Wing Side Up Twin 25s date.

While the SUPRS Golden State Classic Series is responsible for the bulk of the new tracks added, the Indyana Supermod Challenge Regional Tour isn’t far behind with two new speed plants being added to that series. The legendary Winchester Speedway joins The Salem Speedway for the popular Wing Side Up Twin 25s the last week of November. Winchester has seen more than it’s fair share of great race car drivers brave it’s 36 degree banking since it’s building by Frank Funk in 1914. Rightfully known as “The World’s Fastest 1/2 Mile,” Winchester has hosted many real supermodified races throughout it’s history, and that’s why the second race of the Wing Side Up Twin 25s is a perfect fit for the schedule.

Then in the first week of December, another famous track joins the SUPRS Indyana Supermod Challenge tour. Anderson Speedway joins the schedule for the first time in SUPRS history for a Twin 40 lap feature affair on December 3, 2023. Anderson is the home of the richest pavement sprint car race in the world, “The Little 500” and the history of the track dates back to 1948 when Joe Helpling built the track and named it Sun Valley Speedway. SUPRS will honor that history with the Sun Valley Twin 40s as part of the expanded Indyana Supermod Challenge Regional Tour. In addition to The Salem Speedway, Winchester Speedway, and Anderson Speedway, the series also includes the season opening Harvest of Speed at LaPorte Speedway on October 3, 2023, and the Indyana Supermod Challenge Finale’ twin 50s at Indianapolis Raceway Park on March 19, 2024.

SUPRS Empire State Super Series Brand Logo

The Empire State Super Series is another regional supermodified sim racing tour that will see a new track added, but nobody will know which one it is until the end of practice for the SUPRS Blind Date Night on December 5, 2023. A random draw will determine which of three potential NASCAR Heat tracks the drivers will compete on and it’s a near certainty that it will be one they’ve never raced on.

This series is the longest of the all the SUPRS multi-race swings, dating back to the first year of existence of SUPRS when a special “New Year’s Eve 4-n-1 Bash was run. It evolved into dropping the 4-n-1 format of running all of the races on the same night, (New Year’s Eve no less!), into where it now begins with Blind Date Night and not ending until the last week of competition for the non-wing supermodified season which begins in June and runs to August. The 100 lap Mid-Season Championship will be contested at Oswego Speedway and will count towards the Empire State Super Series points standings.

Keystone Nationals Back to Three Races

After a year of having just one race, (the SUPRS Randy Witkum Memorial), the SUPRS Keystone Nationals returns to it’s long-standing format of having three races at three different tracks. This year, as a way to tighten up the big schedule, it’s one of the multi-race swings where the supermodified sim racers will compete on two different tracks on the same night, and like the Golden State Classic Series, The Empire State Super Series, and the Indyana Supermod Challenge, has added a new track to SUPRS 48 race schedule.

Lake Erie Speedway is where the Keystone Nationals kicks off on March 5, 2024, and it’s the first time the SUPRS racers will compete at the 3/8 mile asphalt oval with compound banking from 6-12 degrees in the wide turns. While not a mainstay on the real supermodified racing schedule, the Must See Racing Supermodifieds did compete at Lake Erie Speedway in 2012, and produced a very good race that SUPRS hopes to emulate with their 50 lap race there.

Many of the SUPRS racers are excited about the second race of the night after Lake Erie. That race is a 25 lap affair at Nazareth Speedway. SUPRS first ran at this this one mile oddly shaped track with various elevation changes and banking that varies from 2.7° and 6.0° in 2017, and is one of only two mile long tracks on the schedule this season. The SUPRS Keystone Nationals concludes on Wednesday at Jennerstown Speedway, a track that has been on the SUPRS schedule since 2004.

Other Swings Remain Relatively Unchanged

The North Carolina Swing, SUPRS Florida Speedweeks, and SUPRS Ohio State 500 Series, remain relatively unchanged from previous years with pretty much the same dates and no changes in venues. The North Carolina Swing is the first multi-race swing of the season. Firing off in just the third week of the new season, tracks include the fictional Dasera Speedway with Orange County Speedway on the first night of the swing October 17, moves to Southern National Motorsports Park and Concord Motorsports Park on the second night, and finishes up with The Hickory Hustle at Hickory Motor Speedway on the third night, October 19.

The only change to the SUPRS Ohio State 500 Series is a flip-flop of dates for the races at New Bremen and Toledo.

The SUPRS Ohio State 500 Series sees a slight change only in a switch of track dates. New Bremen Speedway is moving to the first race of the swing, and the Black Kat Klassic, on Sunday October 29, 2023, leaving last year’s opener for the five race trek through the “Buckeye State,” Toledo Speedway, as the final race of the series on March 13, 2024 and the St. Patrick’s Day Grab O’ the Green. Other dates for the SUPRS Ohio State 500 Series include the Terry Gibson Memorial on January 10, 2024 and action at Lorain County Speedway and Columbus Motor Speedway on the same night of January 16. All of the Ohio State 500 feature races are 100 laps.

SUPRS Florida Speedweeks will once again be contested over the course of five nights during the first full week of February. Starting at DeSoto Speedway on February 5, the swing runs every night during the week with stops at Black Creek Raceway, Dodge Raceway Stadium, USA International Speedway, and concludes on February 9 at 5 Flags Speedway in Pensacola.

Here’s the final thrilling lap of the feature from the 2021 SUPRS Florida Speedweeks race at USA Int’l Speedway.

Since SUPRS began in 2004, one of the main goals of the sanction has been to educate the online sim racing world about real supermodified racing, past and present.

The Golden State Classic, The Indyana Supermod Challenge, The Ohio State 500, SUPRS Florida Speedweeks, and Empire State Super Series are all modeled after real supermodified multi-race swings, or at the very least are contested on tracks that have hosted the real supermodifieds. Competing on in those swings/series/regional tours and and sim racing on those tracks are part of that ongoing dedication to bringing about more awareness for “The Ultimate Short Track Race Car.”

Remembering Real Racers

SUPRS continues to honor supermodified racers lost in competition with the Dion Parish Memorial 62 in October, the Terry Gibson Memorial 100 in January, the Randy Witkum Memorial 125 in March and the Billy Vukovich III Classic 100 in April.

These races all carry a guaranteed starter bonus for the winner that can be used at the season ending 20th Annual Summit Classic 125 at Madera Speedway in April.

Favorite Shows Stay

Long-standing events such as the Turkey Shoot in November, Christmas Special in December haven’t gone anywhere, although the Christmas Special has moved away from Sanair Super Speedway and will be at Berlin Raceway this year. As well, the Veterans Day Special at New River Valley, the BMK Logistics Presidents’ Day Special at Lee USA Speedway, Crazy Canuck Snowball Derby at Delaware, the Jeff Russell Special at The Bullring in Las Vegas, and SUPRS Copper World Classic presented by Kern Motorsports, are all on the schedule once again.

Triple 20s for SUPRS 20th Anniversary Special

A “Triple 20s” for SUPRS 20th Anniversary Special is planned on the anniversary date of the supermodified sim racing sanction on a rare Thursday night show November 2, 2023. Similar in concept to the “Triple 33s” that were contested for SUPRS 15th Anniversary Special in 2018 where three different sim racing platforms were used, (NASCAR Heat, rFactor, rFactor2), at one track, the 20th Anniversary Special will use just one gaming platform-NASCAR Heat. However, SUPRS will use three different modifications, (two of which where built “in-house” and are SUPRS originals), for the one platform. The night will see all the action contested at SUPRS Stafford Motor Speedway, a track built for SUPRS by Doug “Flash” Forgue.

Defending Champion Likes Schedule, but Will Miss Races

Defending SUPRS Gold Crest Wing Supermodified Champion, Dave Ohh has voiced his opinion of the schedule and he likes what he sees, even if he won’t be able to contend for his second straight and third overall wing championship. “I like the fact that we are running a few more multi-race nights,” he recently said. “I like the fact that we are running multiple races on the same night given how short each race is.”

“Like the non-wing season, I don’t intend on racing the full season this year since I already know that I’ll be missing some races for travel. So to me, there’s no point in contending for the points championship.”

While the Union, CT driver didn’t seem too fazed by the expanded multi-race swings saying, “None, (of the multi-race swings), stand out in my book. I treat them all the same,” he does believe that SUPRS has one of the toughest schedules he’s seen in sim racing.

“I’d say this is the most challenging only because of how much time is need to commit to running the amount of races in the season with no drop weeks.”

One thing Ohh knows for sure, is who his main opponents will be when he does hit the track for his planned limited schedule during the wing season. Since he joined SUPRS in 2018, he said that winning a feature race has, “Stayed the same with the other main contender being Brad Keysor, but the rest of the field has closed the gap to us.” Keysor is the 2021-22 Gold Crest Wing Supermodified Champion, and has dominated the win column along with Ohh since they both joined. The only other driver to win a championship since 2019 is SUPRS most recent non-wing season champion, Zach Sears.

About SUPRS:

The Supermodified Ultimate Racing Series started in 2004 when supermodified race fans John Davidson and Bob Gangwer started to enjoy online racing with their favorite form of motor-sport, the supermodified division.

The team quickly realized that there were many opportunities available with the online racing platform that would give them a way to give back to the teams, tracks, sponsors and fans of the division. With this thought in mind, and using a suggestion from a member, the league went to a donation to play” format soon after its formation.

By asking members to donate to the newly created Dion Parish Memorial Benevolent Fund for Supermodifieds, SUPRS quickly accumulated funds that allowed the league to donate cash to injured drivers and their families when they needed it the most.

SUPRS has continued to grow using this, until then, unheard of model, and is now in its twentieth  season of sim racing, and is one of the longest continuously operating online racing leagues in history.
